Portland Winterhawks News Release
The Portland Winterhawks overcame an early two-goal deficit and scored the game's final three goals to earn a 3-2 win over the visiting Kelowna Rockets Saturday night at the Memorial Coliseum.
Kelowna opened the scoring 24 seconds into the game on their first shot, when Stepan Novotny beat Kurtis Mucha to make it 1-0 for the Rockets. They added to their lead four minutes later, when Cody Chikie stuffed one in at the doorstep at the 4:29 mark to make it 2-0. Later in the period, Ryan Johansen got Portland on the board on a power play when he roofed one past Rockets netminder Chad Ketting from just under the left faceoff circle to cut the lead to 2-1, which would be the score going into the first intermission. It was Johansen's eighth goal of the season.
Offense was tough to come by in the second period, but late in the frame Portland's Luke Walker had the puck down low in the Kelowna end, and his shot from the corner bounced in past Ketting to even the game at 2-2.
Early in the third, Ty Rattie carried the puck into the Kelowna zone on a two-on-one with Riley Boychuk. Rattie slid the puck to his left and found Boychuk, who put it past Ketting to give Portland their first lead of the game at 3-2. From there, Mucha slammed the door, securing the victory for Portland, their second straight.
After giving up the two early goals, Mucha was perfect over the final 55 minutes, and midway through the third period made career save #6000. He finished with 26 saves on 28 Kelowna shots.
There's no rest for Portland, as they host the Chilliwack Bruins tomorrow night. The puck drops for that contest at 5 p.m. at the Rose Garden.
