Blades Earn Two Big Points In Brandon
November 14, 2009 - Western Hockey League (WHL)
Saskatoon Blades News Release
The Saskatoon Blades came away with a 4-3 road victory over the division rival Brandon Wheat Kings in Friday night WHL action.
Stefan Elliott (North Vancouver, BC) led the way for the Blades with a goal and two assists, Jyri Niemi (Hameenkyro, Finland) had a goal and an assist, while Walker Wintoneak (Flin Flon, MB) and Derek Hulak (Saskatoon, SK) added singles.
The Blades got on the board first on their very first shot of the hockey game. Elliott picked up his 9th of the season on a screened shot that found its way past Wheat Kings' goaltender Andrew Hayes at the 9:35 mark of the first frame.
Niemi gave the Blades a 2-0 lead a minute and a half later with a knuckleball that handcuffed the Wheat Kings netminder high glove side.
The Blades grabbed a 3-0 lead a minute after Niemi's marker on Wintoneak's 13th of the season. Elliott started the play with a point shot that was stopped by Hayes. Wintoneak, cruising towards the Wheat Kings crease, made no mistake on the rebound and the Blades had three goals in less than two and a half minutes to open the scoring.
The Wheat Kings hit the score sheet before the opening period was over. Colby Robak's point shot beat Steven Stanford (Calgary, AB) glove side on the power play to make it 3-1.
The home squad again cut into the lead at the 15:13 mark of the second period when Scott Glennie deposited a Matt Calvert pass in front of the Blades' net and it was a 3-2 hockey game.
Hulak regained the Blades' two-goal lead early in the third period with a power play marker, snapping a shot low to the stick side of Hayes.
Midway through the final frame Calvert brought the Wheat Kings back within one, tipping home a Robak point shot on the power play.
Stanford proved to be a big part throughout the hockey game including stopping Calvert on a penalty shot with less than six minutes remaining in regulation. In the end, the Blades netminder turned aside 44 of 47 shots sent his way for the victory. Hayes made 25 saves between the pipes for Brandon to take the loss.
Final score Saskatoon 4, Brandon 3.
