Oil Kings Can't Snap Skid with 5-4 Loss to Tigers

December 13, 2015 - Western Hockey League (WHL)
Edmonton Oil Kings News Release

The Edmonton Oil Kings returned home from a two-game road swing to the familiar confines of Rexall Place on Sunday night to take on the Medicine Hat Tigers for the second time in as many days. After dropping a 5-3 decision the night before in Medicine Hat, the Oil Kings were unable to get revenge as the Tigers bested them 5-4 in a high-scoring affair at Rexall Place.

The Oil Kings (13-17-3-0) were the first on the scoreboard with opening frame tallies from Tyson Gruninger and Tyler Robertson. The Tigers (10-18-2-1) responded with a goal of their own to make it 2-1 for the home side through 20.

The offence kept coming in the 2nd as both sides continued to go back and forth, with the lone Oil Kings tally in the middle frame coming from captain Brandon Baddock. Two more goals from the Tigers would knot the teams at three heading into the final period.

Despite another goal from Robertson on the power play to start the period, the Oil Kings couldn't keep up with the Tigers in the final 20 minutes, as the visiting side went on to get two unanswered goals from Ryan Jevne and eventually the 5-4 win to take game two in the three-game series with the Oil Kings.

Oil Kings head coach Steve Hamilton felt, despite a strong start, it was his team's lack of finish that was ultimately their downfall.

"Overall we had a decent start in the 1st, but didn't manage to regain much momentum after that," said Hamilton. "It was disappointing that we would not battle harder in the 3rd period of a game where we positioned ourselves pretty well."

Despite the loss, Oil Kings winger Robertson was huge for the home side, tallying three points on the night (2G, 1A). Oil Kings goaltender Payton Lee turned aside 36 of 41 shots, while Mack Shields saved 21 of 25 pucks sent his way to earn the win between the pipes for Medicine Hat.

The Oil Kings look to recover from their current three-game skid as they get set to play another game against the Tigers on Tuesday, December 15th at 7 pm MT at Rexall Place to wrap up the three-game series.
