Oil Kings Acquire Defenceman Kaiden Guhle from Prince Albert

Edmonton, AB - The Edmonton Oil Kings have acquired defenceman Kaiden Guhle from the Prince Albert Raiders, the team announced today.

In exchange, the Raiders receive forward Carson Latimer, defenceman Eric Johnston, a first-round pick in the 2021 WHL Prospects Draft (via Kelowna), a first-round pick in the 2023 WHL Prospects Draft, a conditional third-round pick in the 2025 WHL Prospects Draft, and a sixth-round pick in the 2022 WHL Prospects Draft (via Prince Albert).

"The Edmonton Oil Kings are extremely excited to be adding Kaiden Guhle to our lineup," said Oil Kings President of Hockey Operations and General Manager Kirt Hill. "This was a deal that we worked towards for a long time as Kaiden was a player we were very interested in acquiring."

Guhle, 19, has appeared in 17 games this season with the Raiders while serving as their captain, racking up 15 points (2G, 13A), 28 penalty minutes and even plus/minus rating. In 156 career WHL games, all spent with the Raiders, he has 75 points (17G, 58A), 128 penalty minutes and a +42 plus/minus rating.

In addition to his regular season experience, Guhle also brings with him a championship pedigree after appearing in 23 post-season games and tallying three assists, eight penalty minutes and a +2 plus/minus rating during the Raiders 2019 WHL Championship run.

"Kaiden brings a wealth of experience having won a WHL Championship and leadership with the role he had on his previous club with his strong character both on and off the ice," added Hill. "Kaiden is one of the Canadian Hockey Leagues premiere players and we feel this is an important acquisition to be adding to our strong core in Edmonton. We welcome the entire Guhle family to the Oil Kings organization"

The Sherwood Park, AB product was originally acquired by the Raiders after they selected him with the first-overall selection in the 2017 WHL Draft.

The 6-foot-2, 200-pound left-shot defenceman was selected in the first-round, 16th-overall, of the 2020 NHL Draft by the Montreal Canadiens. Last season, he dressed in three games with the Canadiens AHL affiliate the Laval Rocket.

Guhle captured a silver medal with Team Canada at the 2021 World Junior Championships while putting up a tournament high two goals by a defenceman. Earlier today, he was named to Team Canada's Selection Camp for the 2022 World Junior Championships.

"Most of the time when you make trades of this magnitude you have to say goodbye to quality players and people. We wish Carson and Eric nothing but the best in their future hockey and life endeavors."

Latimer, a Surrey, BC native, was in his second season with the Oil Kings and has put up 25 points (12G, 13A), 12 penalty minutes and +16 plus/minus rating in 46 career games. This past summer, he was selected in the fourth round of the 2021 NHL Draft by the Ottawa Senators.

Johnston, a Regina, SK product, is currently in his rookie season in the WHL having appeared in 19 games with the Oil Kings, putting up four assists, 11 penalty minutes and a +5 plus/minus rating.
