Bedard Invited to Canada's National Junior Team Selection Camp
December 1, 2021 - Western Hockey League (WHL)
Regina Pats News Release
Regina, Sask. - Hockey Canada announced Wednesday that Regina Pats 2005 born forward Connor Bedard has been invited to Canada's National Junior Team Selection Camp.
Bedard, 16, has totaled 17 points (11G-6A) in 21 games this season, while leading the WHL in shots on net (109) and the Pats in goals. The North Vancouver, B.C., native, played for Canada at the IIHF U-18 World Championship this past summer, where the 5-foot-9, 181 lb. centre was tied for second in tournament scoring with 14 points and third in goals with seven in seven games.
"Growing up as a kid you watch that tournament, but to just get the opportunity to go there and work my hardest to make the team is really special and a cool feeling," Bedard said.
Bedard was named the 2020-21 WHL Rookie of the Year where he produced 28 points (12G-16A) in 16 games, and was the first player to be granted exceptional status to the Western Hockey League. He is also the youngest assistant captain in franchise history.
"He's one of I think a half-dozen guys in the league [WHL] who can turn the game around with one play," Regina Pats GM and Head Coach John Paddock said. "It's an honour for our organization and for him. That's a big loss to our team, but it's something we expected to happen whether it was this year or not."
Canada's selection camp runs December 9-12, with a team announcement expected December 13. The 2022 IIHF World Junior Championship will be held at Rogers Place in Edmonton and the Peavey Mart Centrium in Red Deer from December 26, 2021 to January 5, 2022.
