Offense, Triple Play Help Herd Rout Indy, 12-3

Buffalo Bisons News Release

The Bisons arrived at Victory Field in Indianapolis seeking revenge from a sweep at the hands of the Indians one week ago. On Monday night, they took an impressive first step in getting their payback.

All nine batters in the Herd lineup had hits and Buffalo scored in six different innings of a 12-3 rout of the Indians in the first game of a three-game series. The Bisons had 17 hits total and threw in a triple play in a complete team victory over the IL West rival.

Buffalo would love to sweep Indy in their home ballpark after the Indians did that same to the Herd last week at Coca-Cola Field. Indianapolis won three straight from the Bisons, May 25-27, outscoring the Herd 20-10. Buffalo got the first victory in that goal on Monday night.

While the offense was constant throughout the night, the triple play in the fifth inning stole the show. With Buffalo holding a 6-1 lead, Indianapolis got the first two runners on thanks to Jaff Decker's lead-off single and a fielding error by Matt Hague on Mel Rojas Jr's grounder. Former IL All-Star Pedro Florimon stepped to the plate and worked to a full count on Bisons pitcher Randy Wolf.

As Indy sent the runners in motion, Wolf's fastball got in on Florimon, breaking the bat of the Indians' shortstop. Wolf took one step to his right and snagged the soft liner just a few feet off the ground. He then threw on off one foot to Ramon Santiago at second base to double off Decker. With plenty of time left to make the play, Santiago threw to Daric Barton at first base to complete the triple play.

The triple play is the Bisons first since September 1, 2009 when Argenis Reyes, Luis Rivera and Mike Lamb combined for a triple play against Rochester. It's also the third triple play in Bisons modern era history.

The historic play in the field should not overshadow an impressive offensive display by the Herd as the hits came early and often. The first hits of Alex Hassan's and Barton's Herd careers put two in scoring position for A.J. Jimenez to drive home in the second inning with a blooper into right. In the fourth, Buffalo doubled their advantage when Dalton Pompey tripled home Barton and came around on Jon Diaz sac fly.

A 4-0 lead grew to 6-1 in the fifth on RBI singles from Barton and Jimenez. Santiago's two-run single highlighted a three-run seventh inning that put the game out of reach. However, the Herd was not done at 9-2, scoring a run in the eighth and then two more off Indy first baseman Hunter Morris in the ninth inning.

Bisons starter Randy Wolf also got some redemption from Indy's visit to Buffalo last week. The southpaw was touched for eight runs last week in his shortest outing of the season. In this one, the veteran retired the first eight batters he faced in allowing just one unearned run over 5.1 innings of work. Wolf struck out three and walked just one for his first victory since April 22 against Pawtucket.

BISONS NOTES:

The Bisons drew seven walks and struck out just two times in the victory...Matt Hague had three hits, his fourth consecutive multi-hit performance...Ramon Santiago had spent the entire 2015 season on the disabled list before being activated on Sunday. He went 2-5 with two RBI in his Bisons debut on Monday...Todd Redmond was activated to the team prior to the game. Pitcher Austin Bibens-Dirkx was placed on the disabled list, retroactive to May 31.
