International League Names Players of the Week

The International League announced today that Scranton/Wilkes-Barre infielder Cole Figueroa and  Gwinnett pitcher Matt Wisler have been named the League's Batter and Pitcher of the Week for the  period from May 25-31.  This is Wisler's second weekly award this season, making him the first  Gwinnett player to be so honored twice in the same season since 2011 when it was accomplished by  pitchers Julio Teheran and Mike Minor.  Figueroa's honor is also the second for his club this season,  following Rob Refsnyder (May 11-17). 

COLE FIGUEROA, Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders IL BATTER OF THE WEEK 

Cole Figueroa led the International League last week with a .550 batting average, a .609 on-base  percentage, an .800 slugging percentage, and 10 RBI.  He made headlines Wednesday when he set a  career high for hits in a game by going 5-for-5 with a homer, a double, and a career-high-matching  five RBI to help the RailRiders win 9-6 and complete a three-game sweep at McCoy Stadium in  Pawtucket.  He followed that performance by collecting two hits and four RBI in SWB's 7-0 win  Friday over Norfolk.  Figueroa struck out just once in 20 at-bats this week.  For the season, he  comfortably leads the League with a ratio of 23.57 plate appearances per strikeout; the next best ratio  is owned by Indianapolis' Steve Lombardozzi with 11.57 plate appearances per strikeout.    27-year-old Cole Figueroa is in his eighth season playing professionally and his first in the Yankees  organization after signing as a free agent this past December.  Figueroa made his Major League debut  last season, seeing action in 23 games for the Tampa Bay Rays.  Figueroa is a native of Tallahassee,  Florida. 

MATT WISLER, Gwinnett Braves IL PITCHER OF THE WEEK 

For the second time in four weeks, the IL Pitcher of the Week is Gwinnett's Matt Wisler.  Last week  didn't begin as planned for Wisler, who was able to go just 2.0 innings in Monday's start before rain  forced the game against Lehigh Valley to be suspended with the Braves leading 1-0.  (Gwinnett  ultimately won 8-2).  Wisler returned to the hill Saturday evening against Columbus and delivered  the longest outing of his career.  He cruised through 8.1 innings and allowed just four baserunners in  a 1-0 Braves victory.  Wisler retired twelve straight Clippers at one stage and tied a season-high with  seven punchouts.  After starting the season 0-3 in his first four starts, Wisler has now evened his  record at 3-3. 

22-year-old Matt Wisler is in his third season as a professional pitcher.  He was selected by San Diego  in the 7th round of the 2011 draft out of high school.  Wisler went 9-5 in his first taste of Triple-A  Baseball last season pitching for El Paso of the Pacific Coast League.  Just prior to the 2015 season he  was dealt to the Braves as part of the trade for Craig Kimbrel and Melvin Upton, Jr.  Wisler is a native  of Bryan, Ohio.
