Syracuse Mets News Release

The Washington Nationals announced a pair of transactions Monday regarding the Syracuse Chiefs. Left-handed reliever Matt Grace was optioned to Syracuse, with left-hander Felipe Rivero recalled by Washington. In addition, right-handed pitcher P.J. Walters was acquired by the Nationals in a trade from the Dodgers for cash considerations, with the Nationals announcing Walters will go to Syracuse. Please note that neither Grace nor Walters have reported to Syracuse, meaning neither player currently counts against the Chiefs' roster.

Grace served as a critical setup man for last year's league-best Syracuse team. He sported a 1.30 ERA in 28 games, allowing just 28 hits and 13 walks in 41 and two-thirds innings. This season, Grace pitched to a 3.52 ERA in five Chiefs games before making his major-league debut with the Nationals. With Washington, Grace pitched in 17 games, putting up a 5.25 ERA in 12 innings - a mark that stood at 2.25 before Monday's game against Cincinnati.

Walters, a 30-year-old starting pitcher from Dothan, Alabama, is currently in his 10th professional year. He has pitched in the organizations of the Cardinals (2006-11), Blue Jays (2011, 2014), Twins (2012-13), Royals (2014) and Dodgers (2015). Since 2009, Walters has pitched in 40 major-league games (24 starts) with a 6.28 ERA and 6-10 record in 152.0 innings. In his minor-league career, Walters is 67-54 with a 4.20 ERA in 214 games (177 starts). His first Syracuse appearance would complete a Thruway-Cup career for Walters, who pitched for Rochester in 2012 and 2013 and Buffalo in 2014. This season, he's pitched to a 4.82 ERA in five starts between Triple-A Albuquerque and Double-A Tulsa in the Dodgers' system.

The Chiefs resume their season with a Tuesday doubleheader against the Louisville Bats at 5:05 p.m. at NBT Bank Stadium.
