Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders News Release
UNDERTOWED: The Norfolk Tides (29-22) spoiled Luis Severino's Triple-A debut and took the series from the RailRiders with a 7-2 decision yesterday.
RUBBER OR GLUE?: The RailRiders fell in their fifth rubber match of 2015 and have lost four straight series-deciding games. After besting the IronPigs in a May 22 rubber match, SWB has lost such affairs versus Gwinnett May 7, at Norfolk May 13, versus Charlotte May 20 and yesterday's finale against the Tides.
SOUTH OF THE BORDER: Sunday afternoon's contest marked the RailRiders' final game against a Southern Division team this regular season. They went 12-15 against their Southern brothers including a 2-4 mark against Norfolk. SWB went 7-6 on the road against the South but posted a 4-9 record at PNC Field.
ROW TIDE: SWB logged another non-winning record against Norfolk. The franchise has not won more than it has lost against the Orioles' top farm club since a 5-3 performance in 2010: 2014 - 3-5; 2013 - 4-4; 2012 - 4-4, 2011 - 3-5.
INTERNATIONAL (LEAGUE) MAN OF MYSTERY: After an 0-for-3 effort at Norfolk dropped his average to .197 on May 11, Austin Romine has gone 18-for-53 (.340) with seven RBIs in 14 games played to lift his average to .256. The team's primary catcher has not owned an average that high since he was at .286 after his second game of the season made him 2-for-7 on the year.
EIGHT IS GREAT: Mason Williams has an eight-game hit streak, going 12-for-34 (.353) with five extra-base hits and three walks (.405 OBP).
GETTIN' FIGGY WITH IT: Infielder Cole Figueroa has been named the IL's Batter of the Week for May 25-31. He led the loop with a .550 batting average, .609 OBP, .800 slugging percentage and 10 RBIs. Wednesday he set a career-high mark for hits in a game by going 5-for-5 with a homer, a double, and a career-high-tying five RBIs to help the RailRiders complete a three-game sweep at Pawtucket. He followed that by posting two hits and four RBIs in SWBÃ's 7-0 Friday win over Norfolk. He struck out just once in 20 at-bats. For the season, he paces the loop with at 23.57 plate appearances per strikeout. IndianapolisÃ' Steve Lombardozzi owns the circuit's next-best ratio at 11.57 plate appearances per strikeout.
KINGS OF THE NORTH: At 16-13, the RailRiders produced the IL North's only winning record in May. Rochester went 15-15 while the other four squads in the division logged losing records in Buffalo (11-18), Lehigh Valley (14-16), Pawtucket (12-17) and Syracuse (10-19). Tonight SWB starts a string of 20 games in a row against divisional foes.
TROUBLE AT HOME?: The RailRiders stand six games below .500 at PNC Field (12-18) and seven games over on the road (14-7). The team has hit .284 on the road compared to a .244 mark at home. On the road, SWB has scored 105 runs in 21 games (5.0/game). At home, the squad has plated 100 runs in 30 games (3.3/game). The pitching has performed better at home (3.47 ERA) than outside of Moosic (3.88). No IL team has a better road winning percentage than the RailRiders (.667) and no IL squad has more home losses than SWB (18).
OFF THE RAILS: Ben Gamel notched his team-best 17th multi-hit game and delivered his team-best sixth triple...He has more triples than four IL teams (Buffalo, Norfolk, Pawtucket - 5; Lehigh Valley - 4)...Severino became the 2015 RailRiders' 14th different starter...He allowed two runs on five hits and three walks over 4.1 IP on 91 pitches (57 strikes)...He struck out three including a three-pitch whiff of Henry Urrutia to start the game, all mid-90s fastballs...Ramon Flores' second-inning single to left in the Yankees' 3-0 loss at Oakland yesterday marked his first big-league hit...After the game he received the baseball and said he planned on giving it to his parents.
