LAWRENCEVILLE, GA - In an announcement made today by the International League, Gwinnett Braves' right-handed starter Matt Wisler has been named the league's Pitcher of the Week for May 25-31.
Wisler, 22, went 1-0 and did not allow a run in 10.1 innings across two starts during the week. He gave up four hits, walked two batters and struck out eight. It is his second IL Pitcher of the Week award in 2015, as he also received the honor for his performance from May 4-10 when he went 2-0 with a 1.35 ERA (2 ER in 13.1 IP), one walk and nine strikeouts in two starts.
His start Monday, May 25 against the Lehigh Valley IronPigs was cut short at 2.0 innings because rain suspended the contest at Coolray Field. He did not allow a run on two hits with one strikeout in an eventual 8-2 win for Gwinnett over Lehigh Valley when the game was resumed Thursday. Wisler pitched a career-high 8.1 innings in his next start Saturday, May 30 in a home game against the Columbus Clippers. He allowed two hits and two walks with seven strikeouts in the G-Braves' 1-0 victory.
Rated the Atlanta Braves' No. 2 prospect by MLB.com, Wisler is 3-3 with a 3.58 ERA (22 ER in 55.1 IP) in 10 starts overall with Gwinnett this season.
This is Wisler's fourth career league Pitcher of the Week award, following Texas League Pitcher of the Week honors with Double-A San Antonio on July 8, 2013 and August 26, 2013. He is the only G-Brave to win an IL weekly award this year.
The G-Braves are off on Monday before they begin a three-game road series at Norfolk on Tuesday. First pitch from Harbor Park is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. Right-hander Chien-Ming Wang (2-4, 4.41 ERA) will get the start for Gwinnett. The Tides are slated to start right-hander Bud Norris (0-1, 30.37 ERA). Tony Schiavone has the play-by-play call on 97.7 FM and WSBRadio.com beginning at 6:30 p.m.
The Gwinnett Braves return home on Friday, June 5 for a 7:05 p.m. game against the Durham Bulls. The opener of a six-game homestand is a "Fireworks Friday," featuring a spectacular display following the game. It's also "Paint the Park Purple" night for Relay For Life of Gwinnett.
