Manchester Monarchs News Release
MANCHESTER NH - In a rematch of the 2011 Calder Cup Atlantic Division Semifinals, the Manchester Monarchs conquered the Binghamton Senators and skated away with a 3-2 overtime victory at the Verizon Wireless Arena on Friday night.
Manchester (26-20-0-2) is in second place in the Atlantic Division with 54 points. Binghamton (20-24-2-1) is in fifth place in the East Division with 43 points.
"We took a lot of penalties and I think it fatigued some of our guys," said Monarchs Head Coach Mark Morris. "We played primarily three lines all night and so did they. We were trying to match lines as best we could. There was a lot of reaching and sticking penalties that are not conducive to keeping a lot of sustained energy. I think we have to get away from that, but nonetheless, we found a way to score some nice goals. I thought we had a lot of good things that happened in the game."
The game-winning goal came from center Marc-Andre Cliche during a power play at 3:37 of overtime. Defenseman Thomas Hickey cycled the puck from the right point to Right wing Linden Vey along the right wing boards. Vey wristed an ice-level shot that bounced off of Cliche's left skate, over to his right skate and slipped between the pads on Senators netminder Mike McKenna for his team leading 15th goal of the season.
The Monarchs struck first with a goal by Vey at 13:45 in the opening period. Right wing Brandon Kozun passed the puck back to the top of the right wing circle where defenseman Jake Muzzin was stationed. Muzzin fired a shot that produced a rebound in the left face-off circle. Vey one-timed the loose puck into the net for his 12th goal of the season.
Left wing Mike Hoffman tied the game for the Senators on a 5-on-3 power play goal at 17:39 of the second period. The play started off the stick of center Stephane Da Costa at the left face-off circle when he passed the puck to center Corey Locke behind the Monarchs net. Locke fed a pass to Hoffman at the top of the right wing face-off circle where the left wing wristed a shot that beat Monarchs goaltender Jeff Zatkoff high on the glove side.
Left wing Dwight King gave the Monarchs a 2-1 lead at 14:17 of the third period. Vey skated down to the ice to the right face-off circle before he passed the puck over to Kozun at the top of the left face-off circle. Kozun redirected the puck with a hard pass to King in the slot. King managed to tip the puck into the net for his 11th goal of the season to give the Monarchs a 2-1 advantage.
The Senators responded just fourteen seconds later with a goal by forward Jack Downing at 14:31 of the middle stanza. Hoffman fed Downing who broke in on Zatkoff all alone. As he entered into the slot, Downing roofed the puck into the top of the net for his second tally of the season. Defenseman Dan Henningson also tallied an assist on the tying goal.
Zatkoff (14-8-1) earned his 14th victory of the season stopping 30-of-32 shots. McKenna (13-13-0) took his 13th loss of the season making 26 saves on 29 shots.
Manchester went 1-for-3 on the power play. Binghamton was 1-for-7 with the man advantage.
