Chicago Wolves News Release
ROSEMONT, Ill.---The Chicago Wolves surrendered the game's first goal, but rattled off four straight markers en route to a 4-2 Illinois Lottery Cup victory over the Rockford IceHogs Friday night at the Allstate Arena.
Forwards Tim Miller (2G) and Michael Davies (G, A) and defenseman Mark Matheson (2A) each tallied multiple points for Chicago, which snapped its three-game home skid and pushed its overall winning streak to four games.
"We got off to a pretty lethargic start tonight," said Wolves head coach Craig MacTavish. "Rockford has been playing well and I like how we battled back and were able to come out on top."
After trailing 1-0 just 1:26 after the opening faceoff, Chicago (25-16-1-3) knotted the score with 37 seconds remaining in the first period. Miller wrapped the puck around the net and dropped a backhand pass toward the crease that deflected off a Rockford defender's stick and through IceHogs goaltender Carter Hutton's legs.
The Wolves grabbed the lead 2-1 at 13:54 of the middle frame. Right wing Mark Mancari's shot from the top of the near circle was stopped by Hutton, but he coughed up a rebound to forward Anton Rodin in the slot. The rookie flipped a backhand shot into the empty net for his fifth goal of the year.
Chicago took a 3-1 advantage just 1:08 later when defenseman Nolan Baumgartner slid a pass from the top of the near circle to Davies standing alone at the side of the net. He snapped a shot just under the bar past an outstretched Hutton.
Miller's second tally of the night came at 13:16 of the third period. Matheson's shot from the point was redirected by Miller over Hutton's glove.
Hutton (10-6-2) posted 14 saves.
Rockford (20-22-1-4) cracked the scoreboard at 1:26 of the first period. Center Peter LeBlanc carried the puck into the Wolves zone and flicked a wrister that went over the stick and past screened Chicago netminder Eddie Lack. IceHogs defenseman Ben Youds bagged a power-play marker with 50 seconds remaining in the game, but Lack shut the door the rest of the way to preserve the win.
Lack (11-11-3) thwarted 30 shots.
The Wolves host the Peoria Rivermen in an Illinois Lottery cup game at 7 p.m. Saturday at the Allstate Arena.
