Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins News Release
WILKES-BARRE, Pa. - The Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins scored four unanswered goals in the third period to rally past the Hershey Bears, 4-3, on Friday on Mohegan Sun Arena at Casey Plaza.
The comeback started early in the third frame as consecutive penalties on Hershey gave Wilkes-Barre/Scranton a 5-on-3 advantage. Jason Williams made them pay at 1:58 with a bomb from the point that sailed over the shoulder of a screened Braden Holtby.
Less than two minutes later, Brandon DeFazio beat Holtby to the glove side with a wrister from the near dot that shrunk the Bears' lead to a single goal. Robert Bortuzzo then completed the Penguins' flurry that saw them score three goals in a 2:44 span, firing a shot from the far boards that banked off of a scrum in front and into the back of the net.
Holtby would exit the game after allowing the game-tying marker and Dany Sabourin came off the bench to finish regulation. He would suffer the loss as Paul Thompson completed the Penguins' rally with 4:29 left in the game.
In behind the Hershey net, Brian Gibbons chipped the puck to the far post for Ben Street, who quickly fed Thompson for the one-timer in close that was his seventh goal of the season and put Wilkes-Barre/Scranton ahead for good, 4-3.
Brad Thiessen raised his record to 18-12-2 with 23 saves on the night. Holtby took the no-decision, stopping 18-of-21 over 44:44 of work.
The Bears broke the scoreless tie with five minutes left until the first intermission. Andrew Carroll's shot from near side of the zone was blocked in front, but Garrett Mitchell gathered the rebound and sailed it over the glove of Thiessen.
Hershey upped its lead to two at 6:43 of the second period as Jacob Micflikier connected with a streaking Christian Hanson for the tap-in goal. The Penguins found themselves down, 3-0, four minutes after Hanson's marker when Tomas Kundratek came down from the point to deposit the backhand shot.
It's Faith and Family Night on Friday, February 4 when the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins take on the Albany Devils at 7:05 PM. National recording artists, WatersEdge, will be performing before the game and during both intermissions. Fans who purchase a ticket to the game will also receive a Penguins hat and food voucher for a hot dog, soda and popcorn.
