
Norfolk Finishes the Week with Four Losses

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. â The Admirals struggled last week as they lost four games. On Wednesday, January 14, the Hershey Bears forced overtime with a goal at 18:37 of the third period, and netted the game-winner 25 seconds into the extra session to hand Norfolk a 2-1 OTL. The Blue and Gold fell in overtime once again as they dropped a 3-2 decision at the Lowell Lock Monsters on January 16. At Binghamton the next night, three second-period tallies helped the Senators to a 6-3 win over the Admirals. Norfolk concluded its three-game road jaunt on Sunday with a 4-1 loss at Philadelphia.
The Springfield Falcons (Phoenix Coyotes) make their only regular season appearances at Scope on Friday, January 23 and Saturday, January 24. The puck drops at 7:30 p.m. both nights. The Blue and Gold then visit Wilkes-Barre/Scranton for a match up with the Penguins (Pittsburgh Penguins) on Sunday, January 25 at 5:05 p.m.
The Admirals are sixth in the East Division with record of 16-23-3-5 (40 points). They trail Bridgeport (24-9-5-3, 56 points), Philadelphia (24-14-4-1, 53 points), Hershey (21-15-8-3, 53 points), Wilkes-Barre/Scranton (18-16-4-4, 44 points) and Binghamton (18-17-4-2, 42 points), and are followed by Albany (11-18-5-5, 32 points).

Norfolk is 1-0-0-1 against the Falcons this year, with a 1-0 OTL at Springfield on October 29 and a 3-0 win at Springfield on November 7. The Admirals are now 3-2-0-1 all-time versus Phoenix's farm club. Springfield is last in the AHL with the man-advantage (10.3) and has scored a League-low 19 power play tallies. The squad ranks 15th on the penalty kill (86.0). Peter Ferraro tops the Falcons in goals (10), assists (13) and points (23). Mike Wilson has a plus-8 rating to lead the team while Chris Ferraro and Frank Banham share the lowest rating at minus-14 each. Trevor Gillies' 150 penalty minutes are most on Springfield, and place him fourth in the AHL in PIM. Between the pipes, Jean-Marc Pelletier is 5-14-4 with a 2.63 GAA and a .921 spct. in 26 games. David LeNeveu is 8-9-1 with a 2.57 GAA and a .922 spct. in 18 outings. Pelletier's 14 losses place him third in the League in that category (Johan Holmqvist (HOU) and Maxime Ouellet (POR) 16 losses each).
Sunday, January 25 ... Norfolk @ Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins ... 5:05 p.m.
The Penguins hold a 3-2-0-0 edge in the season series this year, including a 1-1-0-0 mark at Scope, and a 15-14-2-2 lead in the teams' all-time series. Several Admirals have enjoyed success against the Baby Pens thus far in 2003-04, including Matt Ellison (5 GP, 3+3=6 points), Anton Babchuk (5 GP, 3+2=5 points) and Marty Wilford (5 GP, 0+5=5 points). Wilkes-Barre is 15th in the AHL on the power play (14.3) and 28th when shorthanded (79.8). Kris Beech is the Pen's scoring leader with 13+18=31 points. He also tops the club with a plus-14 rating. Matt Murley's 20 helpers are most on Wilkes-Barre. Michel Ouellet leads the Penguins as well as all AHL rookies with 20 goals, and tied with Noah Clark (MCH) and Garrett Stafford (CLV) for fourth in scoring among AHL freshmen. Ouellet is tied with Eric Beaudoin (SAN) for fourth overall in the League in lamplighters. David Koci has spent 131 minutes in the penalty box, the most PIM on the team and seventh-most PIM in the League. In net, Andy Chiodo is 11-7-1 with a 2.14 GAA and .920 spct. in 23 appearances while Martin Brochu is 3-8-1 with a 2.75 GAA and a .902 spct. in 13 games.

* The New York Rangers' AHL affiliate makes its lone appearance of the season at Scope.
TEAM NOTEBOOK
* Norfolk's back-to-back overtime losses last week (2-1 OTL vs. Hershey on January 14; 3-2 OTL at Lowell on January 16) marked the first time in team history the Admirals lost consecutive overtime matches.
* Despite outshooting their opponents in three of four games last week, and outshooting their foes 125-118, the Blue and Gold were outscored 14-8 and finished at 0-2-0-2. Norfolk's shooting percentage was 6.4 while its oppositions' was 11.86 during that span.
* D Duncan Keith netted both of the Admirals' goals in a 3-2 OTL at Lowell on January 16 for his first pro multi-goal game. He is currently second on the team in goals by a defenseman with six on the year (Anton Babchuk - seven).
* LW Igor Radulov has picked up an assist (three total) in three straight games (January 16-18).
* D Tim O'Connell was released from his professional tryout on January 19. In 12 games with Norfolk, he registered 1+4=5 points, 14 PIM and a plus-5 rating.
* G Craig Anderson stopped 20 of 22 shots, but the Chicago Blackhawks fell to the Los Angeles Kings 2-1 on January 18.
