Portland Sea Dogs News Release
(Manchester, NH) - The Fisher Cats scored five runs with two outs in the fifth inning to take the series opener from the Portland Sea Dogs, 6-4 on Saturday night in front of 7,424 at Merchantsauto.com Stadium. The Sea Dogs have lost three straight on their 6-game roadtrip before the All-Star break.
Eric Fowler (2-1) worked five plus innings on three runs and five hits to earn the win for New Hampshire. Kyle Jackson suffered his second straight loss to New Hampshire, surrendering three runs in one and 2/3 innings.
Tracy Thorpe recorded the final five outs for his sixth save of the season.
Portland led 3-1 heading into the bottom of the fifth inning. The Fisher Cats started a rally off Portland starter Michael Bowden. David Smith doubled and Brian Bormaster walked - forcing Bowden out of the game. Jackson retired Juan Peralta on a ground out but Manny Mayorson walked to load the bases. Sergio Santos followed with a run-scoring infield single and Lyle Overbay (Major League Rehab assignment) provided the game-winner with a grand slam. Jackson has allowed grand slams in back-to-back outings - both against New Hampshire (Ryan Patterson on July 3).
Andrew Pinckney put the Sea Dogs on the board in the third inning with a 2-run homer to right field off Fowler. In the fourth inning, Bryan Pritz's sacrifice fly gave the Sea Dogs a 3-0 lead. Overbay finished with 5 RBI, smacking an RBI double in the fourth inning for New Hampshire's first run.
Bowden lasted four and 1/3 innings, surrendering three runs, four hits, two walks and five strikeouts. Lincoln Holdzkom worked two scoreless innings on two hits and two strikeouts.
Dusty Brown had three hits and scored once, improving his average to .266. Jed Lowrie lined a single with the bases loaded in the seventh inning, cutting the deficit to 6-4 but Jean Machi struck out Jay Johnson to end the inning.
Portland has suffered five straight losses to New Hampshire and falls five games behind the Fisher Cats for the second playoff spot in the Eastern League's Northern Division. On Sunday afternoon, Daniel Haigwood gets the start against Kyle Yates
