Binghamton Rumble Ponies News Release
John Bowker homered in the ninth to give the Connecticut Defenders a 6-5 win over the Binghamton Mets at NYSEG Stadium Saturday. The loss is Binghamton's second in their last three games.
Connecticut (37-50) surged ahead against Salvador Aguilar in the top of the second, taking a 3-0 lead on a two-run single by Eugenio Velez and Trey Webb's run-scoring hit.
The B-Mets (36-49) responded with a five-run outburst against Garrett Broshuis in their half of the second. Drew Butera started the barrage with a one-out homer before Wilson Batista and J.E. Cruz singled to put runners at the corners. Lastings Milledge drove home Batista and Cruz with a two-out triple before Corey Coles blooped a doubled down the rightfield line that scored Milledge with the go-ahead run. Mark Kiger's single to center brought in Coles for a 5-3 B-Mets lead.
Velez's sixth-inning single drove in another run before Webb followed with game-tying a sacrifice fly. The game remained tied until Bowker led off the ninth by hitting a Marcelo Perez (1-4) offering over the rightfield fence.
Connecticut's Osiris Matos (3-0) pitched 2 1/3 scoreless innings for the win.
Sunday, the B-Mets play the second game of their three-game series against the Connecticut Defenders. Jose Sanchez (1-4, 4.15) will start for the B-Mets against lefty Geno Espineli (5-5, 3.26) of Connecticut. Game time is 1:05 from NYSEG Stadium with the radio broadcast starting at 12:50 on Newsradio 1290 WNBF.
Notes: Binghamton's last seven games have been decided by two runs or less...the B-Mets had three hits after the second, all singles...Prior to Saturday, Bowker hadn't picked up an extra-base hit or an RBI in seven games.
