Winston-Salem Dash News Release
WINSTON-SALEM, NC (JUNE 15, 2010) - Jon Gilmore's RBI single capped a three-run ninth inning as the Dash came back to beat the Keys 7-6 on Tuesday night at BB&T Ballpark. Winston-Salem rallied from a three-run deficit to take the first game of the series and in the process earned its sixth walk-off win of the season.
The Dash (41-23) reduced its magic number to three in its quest for a Southern Division first half title. Salem stayed within 3.5 games of Winston for first place in the division with a 10-6 win over Wilmington on Tuesday.
Frederick (38-27) scored quickly in the first inning against Terry Doyle. Ronnie Welty's RBI double brought home Xavier Avery, who led off the game with a two-bagger.
Winston-Salem responded with three runs in the bottom of the inning off Ryan O'Shea. Brandon Short doubled and Eduardo Escobar had a bunt single to put men on the corners with no outs. Gilmore slapped an RBI single to right field to tie the game as Escobar moved to third on the play. Seth Loman then hit a broken bat grounder to the second baseman. Miguel Abreu was distracted by the flying barrel of Loman's bat and let the ball roll through his legs. The error allowed Escobar to score and put Gilmore at third and Loman at first. Logan Johnson brought Gilmore home with an RBI single to put the Dash on top 3-1.
The Keys tied it up in the third against Terry Doyle, who had his worst outing of the season. Frederick started a two-out rally and put two men on for Jacob Julius, whose two-run single knotted the game at three.
Doyle saw the Keys start another two-out charge in the fourth. After retiring the first two batters, Phillip Britton doubled and Avery hit an RBI triple to put Frederick ahead 4-3.
Two more Keys runs scored in the fifth as Julius and Greg Miclat collected RBI and Frederick extended its lead to 6-3.
The Dash got one of those runs back in the sixth on an RBI double by Kenny Williams, Jr. and kept it a two-run game heading into the ninth.
Sean Gleason recorded the last out of the eighth and came back out in the ninth inning to preserve the Frederick victory. Jason Bour singled to lead off the inning and Justin Greene also singled to put men on first and second with one out.
The Keys then committed a critical error at the worst possible time. Short hit a tailor-made double-play ball to second base. Abreu rushed his throw and threw over the head of the shortstop and into left field. Bour scored from second as the Dash had the tying and winning runs on base.
Escobar grounded the first pitch he saw through the left side of the infield for an RBI single, scoring Greene and tying the game at six. Gilmore came to the plate and fell behind in the count 1-2. He hit the next pitch between the first baseman and the bag, down the right field line. Short scored easily without a throw and Winston-Salem walked off a winner for the sixth time this season. It was the team's fourth walk-off win in the last ten days.
Dan Remenowsky (2-1) got the win with two scoreless innings of work, striking out four Keys batters. Santos Rodriguez was perfect in 2.2 innings to keep the game close. He has not allowed a run in his last 11.2 innings pitched.
The loss went to Gleason (1-2), who allowed three runs (two earned) on four hits. He was charged with his second blown save of the season.
Winston-Salem goes for the series victory and tried to whittle down its magic number once again on Wednesday night. RHP Dylan Axelrod (2-1, 1.91) makes a spot start against LHP Nate Nery (5-5, 3.39) in a 7 p.m. start. The pre-game show begins at 6:45 on www.wsdash.com.
