Reds Sign Lynchburg College Outfielder

June 15, 2010 - Carolina League (CarL1)
Lynchburg Hillcats News Release

The Cincinnati Reds signed former Lynchburg College Outfielder Jeff Taylor, Jr. to a Free Agent contract Monday. Taylor was undrafted in the 2010 MLB First-Year Player Draft in early June.

Taylor ended his career in Lynchburg as the Hornets' all-time stolen base leader and games played and started leader. His career average at LC was .356 and he was a two-time First Team All-ODAC. This season he hit .371 and led the team with 39 RBI and 59 hits.

After the 2009 college baseball season, Taylor and his family suffered a tragedy. While taking batting practice with his father, the younger Taylor hit a line drive that struck his dad in the neck. Jeff Taylor, Sr. died on the pitcher's mound.

Jeff Taylor, Jr. tried out in front of Hillcats Manager Pat Kelly Monday morning. Kelly then contacted Cincinnati Reds Senior Director of Player Development Terry Reynolds, who then signed Taylor to a contract.

"He performed very well in the tryout," Kelly said. "He's the kind of guy the Reds are looking for. He plays well and plays hard and his maturity will play well alongside the younger minor leaguers."

Taylor flew to Arizona Tuesday morning where he will report to the Reds Arizona League affiliate in Goodyear, AZ. The Arizona League Reds begin play June 21.
