Lynchburg Hillcats News Release

Neftali Soto doubled and scored the Hillcats only run, but it wasn't enough to lift Lynchburg over Kinston. The Cats fall 2-1 in the series opener.

Scoring was tough to come by for both teams as Kinston brings the best pitching staff in the league into the series. Lynchburg threw out 2009 supplemental first round draft pick Brad Boxberger.

The Hillcats struck first in the second inning. Soto reached with a one-out double and later scored when Kyle Day reached on an error by shortstop Ronald Rivas.

The one-run advantage held until the fifth inning. Boxberger walked leadoff hitter Adam Davis, then retired the next two hitters he faced. But with two outs, Karexon Sanchez homered over the right field wall to put the Indians up 2-1. That was all the K-Tribe needed.

Carlos Mendez led off the ninth inning with a single. Alex Buchholz reached on a fielder's choice that retired Mendez, and advanced to third on Kevin Coddington's single. But the tying run was stranded at third.

In his first start since being named to the Carolina League All-Star Team, Boxberger threw four and two-thirds innings. He gave up two earned runs and walked two while striking out six. He gets the loss and falls to 4-6 on the season. Joe Gardner struck out the same threw five innings for Kinston and gets his fifth win of the season. The lone run scored by Lynchburg was unearned.

Lynchburg and Kinston continue their three-game series tomorrow at 7:05. The Hillcats send out Mark Serrano (2-4, 3.26) against T.J. McFarland (7-1, 2.16).
