Myrtle Beach Pelicans News Release

MYRTLE BEACH, SC - With the Myrtle Beach Pelicans carrying an 0-7 record in extra-inning games into Tuesday's opener with the Potomac Nationals, the Birds were befuddled by their inability to pull out a victory in bonus baseball. On Tuesday night, however, the Pelicans exorcised their extra-inning demons in a back-and-forth affair at BB&T Coastal Field. Hot-hitting shortstop Mycal Jones was the hero on this muggy evening, bashing his first Carolina League home run off Clayton Dill leading off the bottom of the 12th inning to give the Pelicans their fourth walk-off victory of the season by the score of 7-6.

In a game started by Pelicans ace and All-Star Randall Delgado, the Birds were fairly sure of their chances on Tuesday's opener, but Delgado wasn't quite as sharp as his sparkling ERA would indicate. In 4 2/3 innings, Delgado allowed five runs but only one being earned to actually lower his ERA to 2.40.

Travis Jones got the Birds on the board in the bottom of the first inning with a long home run off Potomac starter Trevor Holder, his third of the season to give the Pelicans a 1-0 lead. The P-Nats, however, would score a pair of unanswered runs, capped off by a solo shot off the bat of P-Nats All-Star Michael Burges to give the visitors a 2-1 advantage.

A back-and-forth contest would emerge as the Nats plated three in the fifth and one in the seventh to retake the lead at 6-5, but an RBI infield single in the bottom half from Mike Jones that plated L.V. Ware all the way from second base knotted the game at six apiece, which is where the two clubs would remain until the 12th inning.

The bullpen for the Pelicans performed superbly once again in relief of Delgado, tossing 7 1/3 innings while striking out nine and allowing just one run on two hits. David Francis, Paul Clemens, and Luis Avilan (1-1) were phenomenal on the hill, punctuated by Avilan's three inning, six-strikeout performance. The lefty whiffed the last five batters he faced to send the game to the bottom of the 12th.

Leading off the inning was the newest Jones, shortstop Mycal, who knocked 10 hits in 19 at bats in his first four-game stint against the Kinston Indians. The red-hot Jones crushed the first pitch he saw from Dill (3-5) into the left field bleachers, his first Carolina League home run, to send his Pelican teammates leaping over the railings of the dugout to mob the hero at home plate.

Jones now has four multi-hit games in five contests with the Pelicans and his average stands at a gaudy .480 through the first five games. It was a big day for the Jones Trio as Mycal, Travis, and Mike combined to go 8-for-16 with two home runs and five runs batted in the Birds' victory.

The Pelicans have now won six straight games at BB&T Coastal Field, three of them via a walk-off hit.

Be sure to snatch up your tickets for game two of the series with the P-Nats to help support a phenomenal cause as the Pelicans will hold a Locks of Love Night at BB&T Coastal Field. Fans can get their haircut at the ballpark with the trimmed tufts of hair going towards making wigs for children suffering from serious illnesses. In addition to that wonderful cause, it will also be Webkinz Wednesday where the first 500 kids 12 and under will receive the Lion Webkinz upon entering the gates!
