Frederick Keys News Release

Winston-Salem rallied for three runs on four hits and a crucial error in the bottom of the ninth inning to hand Frederick a frustrating 7-6 loss in the series opener at BB&T Ballpark in Winston-Salem, NC. The Keys who rallied from three down in the ninth inning on Sunday evening against Salem saw the tables turned.

With runners at first and second bases and one out RF Brandon Short struck a sharp groundball to Keys 2B Miguel Abreu's right. Abreu gloved beautifully but threw the ball high and left, sailing it into left field. The potential game ending double play scored a run and two batters later the Keys were walking off of the field in defeat. Dash SS Eduardo Escobar singled home the game-tying run on a first pitch fastball and 3B Jon Gilmore won it when he hit a low line drive down the right-field line for the winning double.

Early on the Keys were down 3-1 but battled back with solid two-out hitting. In the third inning RF Ronnie Welty singled, 1B Joe Mahoney walked and after a wild pitch moved the runners into scoring position, DH Jacob Julius singled up the middle to tie the ballgame at 3-3.

An inning later the Keys got a two-out double from C Phillip Britton to start the rally. CF Xavier Avery would then hit his fourth triple of the year giving Frederick the lead. The Keys would hold it until the ninth inning.

Avery went 2-for-5 with a run scored. Welty was 3-for-5 with two runs and an RBI.

The series continues Wednesday, June 16th as the Keys send Nate Nery to the hill looking to even the series. First pitch is set for 7:00 p.m.

Frederick returns home after the all-star break for Peanut Free Night presented by The Frederick Allergy and Asthma Center Thursday, June 24th at 7:00 p.m.
