Nailers, Gulls Battle For Brabham Cup

Entering the final week of the regular season, Wheeling has 104 points and leads San Diego by four points in the race for the Henry Brabham Cup, the trophy awarded each season to the regular season point champion in the ECHL. Wheeling has clinched the Eastern Conference while San Diego has clinched the Pacific Division and needs only one point in its final four games to clinch the Western Conference.

Wheeling plays at Trenton on April 2 and at Atlantic City on April 3. San Diego plays at Fresno on March 29 and at Bakersfield on April 2 while hosting Las Vegas on March 31 and Alaska on April 3.

Wheeling and San Diego are the 12th and 13th teams, respectively, in ECHL history to reach 100 points. Atlantic City and Louisiana can both mathematically achieve 100 points. The defending Kelly Cup Champion Bullies need six points in their final four games to reach 100 points while the IceGators need to win their final two games to reach 100 points.

Qualifying for the postseason for the first time since 1997-98 and winning its first division title since 1994-95, Wheeling is looking for its fourth Brabham Cup, having won the trophy as the Winston-Salem Thunderbirds in 1989-90 and as the Wheeling Thunderbirds in 1992-93 and 1994-95.

Wheeling is only the fifth team in ECHL history to win 50 games and the first since Louisiana won a league record 56 games in 2001-02. Louisiana has tied Trenton for the fourth-most wins in league history and needs one win to tie Pee Dee, which won 51 games in 1998-99, for third place. Florida has the second most wins in ECHL history with 53 in 1999-2000.

The Nailers have set team records for points (104), wins (50), home wins (28) and road wins (22).

had 59 points in 2002-03 and its 45-point increase is the third-highest point increase from one season to the next. The greatest single season point increase is 50 points by Knoxville (44 points in 1992-93 to 94 points in 1993-94) which broke Knoxville's record of 49 points (48 points in 1989-90 to 97 points in 1990-91).

The Brabham Cup is named in recognition of Henry Brabham, who was a founding member of the ECHL and the first owner of the Erie Panthers. A former mayor and businessman who was a major force in professional hockey in Virginia for more than 15 years, Brabham worked tirelessly to establish the fledgling ECHL.

Attendance Increases For 13th Straight Week

With sellout crowds in Idaho and Johnstown on March 27, the ECHL increased its average attendance for the 13th consecutive week as it looks to increase its average attendance for the first time since 1996-97. Heading into the final week of the regular season, the ECHL is averaging 3,882 fans per game, which is up more than four and a half percent from its average of 3,860 for the first 24 weeks of 2002-03 and up more than three and a half percent from its season-ending average of 3,750.

The ECHL has drawn 4,153,742 fans this season surpassing the four million mark for the first time since 2001-02 and the sixth time in league history. The league went over the four million mark four consecutive years from 1996-97 to 1999-2000 when it had a league-high 4,678,087 in 1999-2000. At its current average, the ECHL will draw 4,332,312 which would be the fourth-largest season attendance in the 16-year history of the league.

There have been 38 sellout crowds by 14 different teams in the ECHL in 2003-04 led by Idaho which had its 10th sellout of the season with 5,401 for its last regular season home game on March 27. Johnstown had its sixth sellout crowd of the year on March 27 with 3,703 and has increased its average attendance by more than 16 percent to 2,551.

Florida leads the league in total attendance with 209,804 and average attendance with 6,170 while ranking second with seven sellouts. The Everblades will play their final two home games on April 2 and 3.

Rookies Doell, Cockburn Both Record Second Hat Trick

Cockburn and Doell become the 10th and 11th players to score multiple hat tricks in 2003-04.

Doell, who scored four goals on February 20 at Roanoke, scored at 5:05 of the first to give Gwinnett a 1-0 lead and he made it 2-0 with a goal at 2:13 of the second. Rookie Bryce Cockburn scored his second hat trick of the week when he had the first three goals in Trenton's 8-1 win over Greensboro on March 26. Cockburn, who scored three goals against Reading on March 20, opened the scoring at 4:07, scored again 2:34 later and completed the natural hat trick at 13:09.

Pensacola's Tyler Beechey scored four goals on March 28 to join Doell, Florida's Brian McCullough, Alaska's Jordan Cameron, Wheeling's Jason Jaffray, and Long Beach's Nolan Graham on the list of four-goal scorers. Wheeling's Jaffray, who had four goals against Johnstown on March 7, recorded his second hat trick of the season on March 23 at Reading.

In the first 1,070 games, there have been 18 days where multiple hat tricks have been scored. The ECHL has had 12 days where two hat tricks have been scored and five days where three hat tricks have been scored. The ECHL had six hat tricks scored on February 14 which ties the league record set on October 23, 1993 and tied on February 26, 1994 and February 23, 1996.

Idaho leads the league with seven hat tricks, scored by six different players, while Trenton ranks second with five hat tricks, including a five-goal game by Brunelle. Dayton is the only team that has not scored a hat trick. Atlantic City, Louisiana and Peoria have not allowed a hat trick while Bakersfield has allowed a league-high eight hat tricks and Fresno and Texas have each allowed six hat tricks.

Pensacola's Eklund Nears Season Win Record

Brian Eklund of Pensacola picked up his 36th win of the season on March 28 at Texas and has moved into a tie for second place for most wins in a season by an ECHL goaltender. The ECHL record is held by Mark Michaud, who won 38 games for Hampton Roads in 1993-94. Eklund is tied with Kirk Daubenspeck (36 wins for South Carolina in 2002-03), Jan Lasak (36 wins for Hampton Roads in 1999-2000), Doug Bonner (36 wins for Louisiana in 1997-98) and Marc Delorme (36 wins for Louisiana in 1996-97).

The 6-5 and 210-pound Eklund leads the league with 2,114 saves and the season save record (1,831 by Michaud in 1993-94) on March 9.

Trevor Koenig of San Diego ranks second in the league with 34 wins while Scott Stirling, who won 32 games with Trenton as a rookie in 2000-01, of Atlantic City is third with 31 wins. Stirling is only the third goaltender in league history to win 30 games in more than one season. Nick Vitucci won 35 games with Toledo in 1994-95 and 32 games with Charlotte in 1995-96 while Jeff Salajko won 35 games with Columbus in 1996-97 and 30 games with Columbus in 1998-99.

Marc Magliarditi of Las Vegas, who won 32 games with Florida in 1998-99, and Greg Gardner of Mississippi, who won 32 games with Mississippi in 2002-03, are tied for fourth with 29 wins. With one more win, Gardner will join Vitucci as the only goaltenders in ECHL history to win 30 games in back-to-back seasons. Gladiators Tie Shutout Record

Gwinnett tied the ECHL record for consecutive shutouts with three shutouts in a row from March 21-26. The Gladiators, who held their opponents scoreless for 198:11 from March 20-27, tied the record set by Hampton Roads from March 23-29, 1997.

Prior improved to 13-6-4 while lowering his goals against average from 2.78 to 2.54 and raising his save percentage from .909 to .916. Reassigned from Chicago of the American Hockey League on March 26, Garnett is 20-10-2 with a goals against average of 2.12 and a save percentage of .927 in 32 games for the Gladiators. Selected in the third round (80th overall) by Atlanta in the 2001 National Hockey League Entry Draft and under NHL contract to Atlanta, Garnett ranks third in the league in goals against average and is tied for third with four shutouts.
