Nicolino, Big Innings Help Suns Batter Biscuits 10-0

JACKSONVILLE, FL - Backed by an onslaught of early runs and a brilliant outing from Justin Nicolino (W, 2-2), the Jacksonville Suns (11-13) used ten runs between the second and third innings to cruise to a 10-0 victory over the Montgomery Biscuits (16-8) Sunday afternoon from Bragan Field.

Nicolino held the Biscuits scoreless through a career-high eight economical innings, allowing just three hits while walking one batter and recording four strikeouts. Nicolino retired each of the final 17 batters he faced in his outing.

After being retired in order in the bottom of the first inning, the Suns broke through for four runs in the bottom of the second inning, receiving a two-run single from Austin Nola, a sacrifice fly from Isaac Galloway and a run-scoring double off the bat of Alfredo Lopez in the frame.

The Suns picked up where they left off as they batted around in the third inning, scoring six runs in the process. Jacksonville received RBI singles from Austin Nola and Danny Black and a two-run double from Brady Shoemaker. Two additional runs scored on an error by Ryan Brett on a ball off the bat of Alfredo Lopez in the inning.

Edgar Olmos finished off the game for the Suns, working a 1-2-3 ninth inning in a non-save situation.

Michael Colla (L, 1-3) took the loss after allowing 10 runs (four earned) on nine hits in 2.2 innings of work while finishing with two walks and two strikeouts. The Biscuits received 5.1 scoreless innings of relief from Andrew Bellatti and Braulio Lara to complete Sunday's ballgame.

The last 20 Biscuits to come to the plate were retired in order; with the last base runner the Biscuits had being back in the third inning when Joey Rickard drew a one-out walk.

Five different Suns had multi-hit games, with Danny Black, Brady Shoemaker, Alex Burg, Wilfredo Gimenez and Austin Nola all finishing Sunday's game with two hits apiece.

Two Suns drove in multiple runs in Sunday's winning effort, with Austin Nola driving in a season-best three runs batted in and Brady Shoemaker finishing with two RBI.

Danny Black extended his hitting streak to 10 games, the longest active streak in the Southern League and the second longest in the Southern League this season (Birmingham's Trayce Thompson had a 12-game hitting streak from April 4 - April 16).

Jacksonville and Montgomery will be back at it tomorrow morning at 11:05 a.m. ET for the finale of this 10-game homestand at Bragan Field. The Suns will send out the right-hander Jose Urena (1-2, 6.28) to the mound on Monday morning, and he's set to be opposed by former Sun and current Biscuits righty Matt Neil (1-0, 3.68).
