Indianapolis Indians News Release
Indianapolis - Valparaiso (Ind.) High School product Jerrick Suiter roped a leadoff triple and scored the game-winning run in the eighth inning as the Indianapolis Indians blanked the Syracuse Chiefs 2-0 on Monday night. Kevin Newman drove home Suiter with a single to give Indy its first last at-bat win of 2018.
Inserted as part of a double-switch in top of the eighth inning, Suiter made the most of his one at-bat with a line-drive triple to the alley in left-center. Newman promptly drove him in with a knock up the middle off Tim Collins (L, 0-1).
Indianapolis (8-7) then played small ball to add an insurance run. Pablo Reyes sacrificed Newman to second base ahead of a wild pitch that moved him to third. Against a drawn-in infield, Christopher Bostick chopped a grounder to shortstop, but Newman's quick jump allowed him to score to make it 2-0.
Syracuse (10-6) threatened throughout the night but failed to scratch across a run. They finished 0-for-10 with runners in scoring position and left 12 men on base overall.
Alex McRae set the tone for his strong outing by working out of a second-and-third, no-out jam in the first. A popout and two fielder's choices helped him escape unscored upon. He stranded two more runners in the second to begin a stretch of 11 straight batters retired.
The Chiefs loaded the bases again in the sixth, but McRae tallied his fourth punchout to keep the visitors off the scoreboard.
Dovydas Neverauskas (W, 1-0) pitched the final two innings for Indy. He walked the bases loaded in the eighth but was bailed out on a diving stop by Jose Osuna at the hot corner which kept the game level at zero.
Osuna stretched his hitting streak to a league-best 13 games with a single in the sixth.
The Indians and Chiefs meet for the second time in their three-game set on Tuesday, April 24 at Victory Field. Right-hander Tyler Eppler (1-1, 2.84) will start for Indianapolis, opposite Chiefs southpaw Tommy Milone (1-0, 4.11).
