Gwinnett Stripers News Release
ROCHESTER, NY - Dustin Peterson's seventh-inning grand slam powered the Gwinnett Stripers to a 5-2 win over the Rochester Red Wings on Tuesday night at Frontier Field.
Peterson, facing right-hander Ryne Harper following walks to Jose Bautista and Ronald Acuna Jr. and a single by Carlos Franco, crushed an 0-2 pitch over the left-field wall. His first home run of the season snapped a 1-1 tie and gave the Stripers a commanding 5-1 lead.
The grand slam was the first by a Gwinnett player since Xavier Avery on Aug. 13, 2017 vs. Louisville. It was Gwinnett's first grand slam on the road since Mauro Gomez on July 25, 2011 at Norfolk.
Chase Whitley was sharp in a spot start for the Stripers, tossing 3.1 scoreless, hitless innings, walking one and striking out three. Andres Santiago (W, 1-0) replaced him in the fourth and worked for 4.2 innings, yielding two runs - one earned - on one hit and four walks while striking out five.
Franco's fifth-inning RBI single off Red Wings' starter Myles Jaye gave Gwinnett a 1-0 lead, but Rochester tied it in the sixth. Gregorio Petit reached on an infield single and scored as Jake Cave lifted a ball to left field that Acuna Jr. lost in the lights for an error.
Santiago walked the first two batters he faced before exiting in the ninth, and Evan Phillips (S, 1) yielded an RBI single to Willians Astudillo before shutting the door.
Peterson fell a triple shy of the cycle, going 3-for-4 with a double, homer and season-high four RBIs. Franco went 2-for-5 with an RBI, and Acuna went 2-for-4 with a double and a run scored.
Harper (L, 0-1) allowed four runs on three hits over 2.0 innings for the Red Wings.
The Stripers (7-10) and Red Wings (6-9) conclude the series Wednesday morning at Frontier Field, with first pitch scheduled for 11:05 a.m. The Gwinnett starter has yet to be announced, while Rochester will start left-hander Adalberto Mejia (0-0, 5.63 ERA). Dave Lezotte has the play-by-play call on 97.7 FM The Other Side of the River beginning at 10:35 a.m.
The Gwinnett Stripers return to Coolray Field on Friday, April 27 for a 7:05 p.m. game vs. the Durham Bulls. For tickets, call 678-277-0340 or visit GoStripers.com.
