Omaha Storm Chasers News Release

OMAHA, Neb. - The Omaha Storm Chasers (5-3) dropped their home opener in a 5-3 defeat at the hands of the New Orleans Zephyrs (3-5), their second consecutive home opener loss. Omaha has dropped two of their last three games after starting the season 4-1.

Omaha got off to a hot start in the first inning as Whit Merrifield hit a solo homer in their first at-bat of the game, and the next three batters reached with singles including a RBI knock by Moises Sierra. After the four straight hits Cheslor Cuthbert then grounded into a 5-4-3-6 triple play, the second ever at Werner Park, to cut down the promising rally. The Chasers could only manage one run the rest of the way on Orlando Calixte's first Triple-A home run, a solo shot in the fourth.

Christian Binford (0-1, 4.50 ERA) only allowed one hit in his first three innings, but gave up eight hits in the next three innings to suffer the loss. The two big blows came on a two-run homers by Justin Bour in the fourth and Miguel Rojas in the sixth, both their firsts of the year, with Rojas giving the Zephyrs the lead for good. Omaha stranded a pair of runners in scoring position in the final three innings.

The Storm Chasers have lost eight of their last 12 meetings with New Orleans at Werner Park dating back to the final three games during the 2013 season. Omaha had not allowed more than four runs in a game for six straight contests before tonight's loss.

In the second game of the series the Chasers will send out RHP Yohan Pino (1-0, 0.00 ERA), who threw seven innings of one-hit ball in his season debut against the Zephyrs in New Orleans on April 12. He will face off with RHP Andre Rienzo (0-1, 3.60 ERA), with first pitch on 1180 Zone 2 The Deuce and MiLB.TV scheduled for 2:05 p.m.
