Fresno Sweeps Salt Lake With Another One Run Victory

April 17, 2015 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1)
Fresno Grizzlies News Release

Fresno, Calif. - The Fresno Grizzlies (6-2) held on for a 5-4 victory Thursday night at Chukchansi Park in front of 6,634 fans in the homestand finale. It marked their fifth one-run game of the season (4-1 in such games) and fourth in the last five games. The Grizzlies bus out this evening to embark on an eight-game road trip. They'll play four games in Las Vegas (April 17-20) and four in Salt Lake (April 21-24), before returning home to Downtown Fresno for a four-game series against the Reno Aces, Triple-A affiliate of the Arizona Diamondbacks.

Fresno used a big first inning for a second straight night to get out to an early lead. Nolan Fontana and Alex Presley hit back-to-back singles to lead off the game, and then Matt Duffy, Preston Tucker, and Matt Dominguez all followed with run scoring doubles to make it 4-1. Salt Lake cut the lead to one in the third when Josh Rutledge and Carlos Perez knocked back-to-back doubles off starter Dan Straily (W, 2-0).

Despite piling up 10 hits against Straily, the Bees couldn't capitalize with runners in scoring position. That theme ran through the night as they finished just 5-for-17 with RISP, but still outhit the Grizzlies 14 to 11.

The Grizzlies added the fifth and decisive run in the fourth when Nolan Fontana tripled and scored on a ground out. The Fresno bullpen once again shut down the Bees, limiting them to just one run on four hits over the final four innings. James Hoyt bounced back from yesterday's outing to record his second save of the season.

The series sweep by Fresno is their first since May of last year when they took a four-game series at Albuquerque, and marks their first at Chukchansi Park since July 30-August 2, 2013 when they swept a four-game series against Round Rock.
