Trenton Thunder News Release
(Trenton, NJ)- New Britain Starting Pitcher Ryan Mullins hurled eight shutout innings to lift the Rock Cats to a 5-0 win over Trenton on Sunday night from Waterfront Park. It's the first time Trenton has been shutout in a game since June 16th.
New Britain (41-40) took a 1-0 lead in the first inning on an RBI ground out by Right fielder Juan Portes. The Rock Cats tacked on two runs in the third inning to increase the lead to 3-0. With Catcher Danny Lehmann at second base and Center fielder Rene Tosoni at first base, Portes connected on a two-out two-run double. Lehmann added an RBI single in the fourth inning to make it 4-0, and a bases loaded walk to Left fielder Danny Berg in the fifth inning capped off the scoring for the Rock Cats.
Mullins (6-8) tossed a season-best eight innings to pick up the win. He scattered five hits and did not walk a batter. Mullins was 0-2 and had a 7.20 ERA in two prior starts against the Thunder this season. Trenton Starting Pitcher Jeremy Bleich (0-2) allowed nine hits and five runs (three earned) in six innings to take his second loss in two starts for the Thunder. Trenton's bullpen tossed three more shutout innings, and has only allowed two runs in its last 15 innings of work.
New York Yankees Catcher Jose Molina started for the Thunder on a rehabilitation assignment, and played the first seven innings of the game. He went 0 x 3 with two strikeouts. Trenton Shortstop Eduardo Nunez had three hits, including a double, in the loss. Nunez has now hit safely in 18 of his last 21 games, and leads the Thunder with 25 multi-hit games.
