South Carolina Stingrays News Release
North Charleston, SC - The South Carolina Stingrays and Head Coach Jared Bednar announced today that goaltender Michal Neuvirth has been recalled to the Hershey Bears of the American Hockey League.
Neuvirth, 20, made his professional debut on Saturday night against the Augusta Lynx stopping 17 of 20 shots for the 5-3 victory for the Rays.
The Usti Labem native spent the previous two seasons in the Ontario Hockey League (OHL), playing for the Plymouth Whalers, Oshawa Generals and Windsor Spitfires, posting a 43-15-12 record. During the 2006-07 campaign, the 6-foot-1, 197-pound netminder was runner-up for the OHL Goaltender of the Year Award, recording 26 wins and four shutouts, as well as a league-leading 2.32 goals-against average and .932 save percentage.
Originally, Neuvirth was Washington's 2nd round selection (34th overall) in the 2006 NHL Entry Draft. He played in one game for Washington during the preseason, allowing two goals in the Capitals' 5-2 win over the Carolina Hurricanes on Sept. 25 at Verizon Center. He previously saw NHL preseason action in a 4-3 overtime loss to Carolina on Sept. 16, 2007, at the RBC Center in Raleigh, North Carolina.
The Rays are back in action on Friday night when they travel to Estero, FL to take on the Florida Everblades. Game time will be at 7:30 and the game can be heard on New Sports Radio 1450.
