Biloxi, MS - The Mississippi Sea Wolves opened the 2008-09 season with a win at Augusta by the score of 4-2 on Friday, and lost their second game of the weekend 6-2 at Gwinnett on Saturday.

AUGUSTA, GA- Ryan Cruthers scored a pair of goals and Ryan Munce made 39 saves as the Sea Wolves took the season opener from the Augusta Lynx 4-2 at James Brown Arena in Augusta.

After being denied on several good chances during an early power play, Ryan Cruthers took Mike Berry's pass, walked out of the left wing corner and let a shot go that was deflected over Augusta goaltender Joel Martin's shoulder to give the Sea Wolves a 1-0 lead at the 18:05 mark of the first period.

Matt Auffrey got Augusta on the board early in the second period when he was able to hammer Aaron Slattengran's pass through the crease past the Sea Wolves Ryan Munce at 1:29. Mississippi answered back just 54 seconds later when Cruthers picked up his second of the night from Kyle McAllister at 2:23. McAllister picked up his second point of the game when he took a pass from Cruthers and blasted it past Martin for a power play goal at 5:32 of the second. Mark Rooneem extended the lead to three goals for Mississippi when his shot from the right circle trickled through the pads of Martin and into the net at 9:48.

Augusta would get a power-play goal from Slattengren at 14:39 of the third period, but Mississippi weathered a storm of power plays late in the third period behind strong goaltending from Munce to pull out the victory.

Munce made 39 saves as he improved his record to 1-0-0 for the season, and Mississippi was 1-for-8 on the power play.

Saturday, October 18 @ Gwinnett, 2-6 L

DULUTH, GA - Four power play goals, including two in the third period, powered the Gwinnett Gladiators past the Mississippi Sea Wolves at the Arena at Gwinnett Center on Saturday night.

A pair of power-play goals in the first period got Gwinnett out to a 2-0 lead in the first period. Josh Engel took a feed from Pat Bateman and fired it past Sea Wolves' goaltender Jeremy Duchesne with Chase Trull off for hooking at 12:37. Exactly six minutes later, Brad Schell fired a one-time blast from the top of the right wing circle past Duchesne while Gwinnett was on a five-on-three man-advantage.

Mississippi got on the board early in the second period when Alexandre Parent found the rebound of Mathieu Melanson's shot in the low slot and drove it past Gwinnett goalie Kevin Nastiuk, who was drawn out of position at 3:39. Gwinnett would get its' two-goal lead back when Bryan Esner fed the puck up the right side to Bruce Graham, who broke in alone on Duchesne and tucked the puck through his pads at 13:33 of the second.

Mathieu Melanson drew the Sea Wolves back within one when Mike Wirll floated a pass through the air and Melanson batted it out of the air and past the outstretched blocker of Nastiuk at 17:43.

Ryan Mahrle extended the Gladiators lead with a power-play goal at 7:29 of the third period as he found the rebound of Andy Brandt's shot. The Gladiators would take a 5-2 lead when Scott Marchesi found the rebound of Pat Bateman's shot and blasted it into the net at 12:07 of the third period. Bruce Graham picked up his second goal of the night and Gwinnett's fourth power-play goal of the evening from Esner and Jeff Mason at 16:23.

Jeremy Duchesne made 42 saves, taking the loss, and Mississippi was 0-for-6 on the power play.

Sea Wolves Notebook

The Sea Wolves' win on Friday night at Augusta was their first win in a season-opening game on the road since a 3-2 win at Baton Rouge on October 12, 2002... Ryan Cruthers is tied for 3rd in ECHL rookie scoring with three points (2g, 1a)... The last time the Sea Wolves had a .500 winning percentage was 25 games into the 2004-05 season, when the team was 11-11-3 after a 3-2 loss to Charlotte on December 22, 2004...

Traffic and Construction

Be sure to allow extra time to arrive and park at the Mississippi Coast Coliseum for all Sea Wolves games due to traffic from the repaving of Highway 90 and construction in the Coliseum area.
