Nelson, Sounds slam 'Birds in extras

Memphis, Tenn. - Nashville battled Memphis for 12 innings before coming away an 8-7 winner Sunday night at AutoZone Park in front of a season-high 14,151 fans.

With the bases loaded in the top of the 12th inning Brad Nelson crushed the first pitch he saw from Redbirds reliever John Wasdin for a grand slam to right field. Josh Phelps brought the 'Birds within a run in the bottom of the inning with a three-run blast to left field. However, Nashville reliever Erasmo Ramirez rebounded to get the next two outs, fanning Gabe Johnson to end the game.

Nelson led the Sounds with five RBI thanks to a pair of home runs, including a solo shot in the seventh inning. Ben Howard earned the win in relief working a scoreless inning. Nashville starter Lindsay Gulin allowed two runs on four hits with four walks and five strikeouts over six innings.

Joe Mather had a team-high three hits and belted his team-best 12th home run of the season with a solo homer in the first. Phelps' home run was his eighth of the year. Starter Anthony Reyes pitched six strong innings giving up one run on two hits with six strikeouts. The right-hander also hit his first home run of the season with a solo homer in the third inning.

Memphis will wrap-up their series with the Sounds tomorrow afternoon with first pitch scheduled for 1:05 p.m. Right-hander P.J. Walters gets the nod for the 'Birds and Nashville is scheduled to send former St. Louis Cardinals pitcher Jeff Weaver to the hill.
