Colorado Springs Sky Sox News Release

Sean Barker got a nice birthday bruise that capped off a late-inning rally as the Sky Sox narrowly defeated Tacoma, 10-9 Monday at Security Service Field in front of 2,422 fans.

Barker came to the plate with the game tied and the bases juiced in the final inning. Facing Roy Corcoran, the birthday boy took an 0-1 pitch off his forearm to send the Sky Sox to an improbable victory.

The Sky Sox were trailing 8-3 in the eighth inning when Chris Frey's one-out single sparked a rally. The centerfielder's hit was followed by consecutive hits, including Christian Colonel's two-run double that cut the lead to three. A single by Joe Koshansky (also celebrating a birthday Monday) and a walk to Barker preceded a single that plated two runs and cut the lead one. Rick Guarno's sacrifice fly tied the game on the next at-bat.

Steven Register (3-1) picked up the win despite allowing the Rainiers to take the lead in the top of the ninth when Charlton Jimerson knocked a run-scoring double.

Chris Frey's one-out triple in the ninth inning sparked another rally for the Sky Sox. Following a walk to Nix, Corcoran was called into the game for the Rainiers and allowed Colonel to tie the game with a single to shallow centerfield.

Josh Towers started the game for Colorado Springs and looked to be getting into a rhythm in the fourth inning after allowing runs in both the first and third inning. The veteran pitcher retired all six batters consecutively in the fourth and fifth inning before running into trouble in the sixth inning. A leadoff home run from Jimerson was followed by four consecutive hits, including Tug Hulett's two-run triple.

Chris Jakubauskas pitched seven solid innings for the Rainiers, allowing three runs on just four hits before handing the ball to Jon Huber to begin the eighth inning.

The Sky Sox travel to Salt Lake City Tuesday for a four-game set. Franklin Morales (1-2, 13.09) gets the ball for Colorado Springs and will oppose Nick Adenhart (4-2, 2.61).
