Sidewinders Drop Sixth Straight Contest

Tucson, AZ - The Sacramento RiverCats scored twice in the top of the 9th inning to top the Tucson Sidewinders 6-4 Sunday.

Both squads played long ball in the 1st inning, with the RiverCats taking the early lead on a 2-run shot by Brooks Conrad. The Sidewinders answered back 2-run homer by Trot Nixon and a solo blast by Josh Whitesell.

The bomb by Whitesell was his third of the homestand and team leading twelfth of the season.

Tucson scored just one additional run after the first the squander a strong outing by starting pitcher Billy Buckner, who went 7 innings allowing 4 runs while striking out 7.

The game was tied 4-4 heading into the 9th inning, but 3 hits by Casey Rogowski, Travis Buck and Kevin Melillo brought in 2 runs off reliever Emiliano Fruto (2-3) who took the loss. Rehabbing pitcher Kiko Calero (1-1) earned the win for the RiverCats with Jay Marshall closing it out for his first save of the season.

Tucson and Sacramento will square off for the final game of the four game set Saturday when righthander Esmerling Vasquez (0-1, 6.28) will take the mound for the Sidewinders opposed by righty Chris Gissell (0-0, 2.25). First pitch is at 6:30 p.m. The game will air live on COOL 1450 beginning at 6:20 p.m.
