CHARLOTTE, NC - The Wheeling Nailers made their longest road trip of the year this weekend traveling from Dayton, OH last night after a 4-2 win to Charlotte North Carolina to face the Checkers in the brand new Charlotte Bobcat Arena.

The Nailers wasted no time in quieting the over 9,000 Checkers fans when Luis Tremblay took a pass from Bo Cheesman and beat the Checker goalie Jeff Glass at 6:56 of the first. Less than a minute later Brendon Hodge scored his eleventh of the year to take a 2-0 lead at 7:40. Charlotte got on the board when Teixeira scored his first goal of the year beating Andy Franck at 10:26. Although they out shot the Nailers 9-7 in the period the Checkers trailed 2-1.

In the second period the Nailers extended their lead back to a two goal lead on Eric Sonnenberg's twelve goal of the year at 11:59.Later in the period Tim Verbeek picked up a bad clearing attempt by the Charlotte goaltender and wristed it into the empty net before Glass could get back to give the Nailers a 4-1 lead.

In the third period Verbeek matched his season total in goals with his second of the night and fourth of the year beating the new Checker goalie, Holt with a backhand. With 1:18 left in the game the Nailers scored their sixth goal of the night. Bill Downey scored his second of the season with an assist from Cam Paddock and Mike Doyle. With the win the Nailers have moved one step closer to the playoffs needing only 23 more points to clinch a spot.

The Nailers will continue their road trip next Friday and Saturday nights in Toledo with back to back games against the Storm. They return home on February 25th for Boy Scout night / Terry Virtue Bobblehead night. Nailers Kelly Cup playoff ticket packages are on sale now.
