
Four-goal first period propels Charlotte to 5-2 win over Augusta

(Augusta, Georgia - Friday, February 10, 2006) The Charlotte Checkers ripped off four first-period goals and got solid goaltending from Chris Holt en route to a 5-2 victory over the Augusta Lynx Friday night in Georgia. Juris Stals had a pair of goals for the Checkers, with single goals provided by Rick Kozak, Dusty Jamieson and Rory Rawlyk. Holt notched his fifth win of the season making 29 saves.
The win was the second straight for the Checkers, who are in the midst of eight games in 13 days. Friday's road game was Charlotte's only contest away from home in a current stretch of 11 home games in 12 matches.
"It was a good all-round effort by the whole team," remarked Checkers coach Derek Wilkinson. "Our offense really broke loose in the first period, and Chris Holt played a very consistent game in goal. This was a good confidence-building game for Chris and for the whole team."
The Lynx took a 1-0 lead seven minutes into the contest as Brian Passmore cleaned up a rebound on the doorstep on a power play.
The Checkers roared back with four un-answered goals in the final 13 minutes of the period for a 4-1 advantage after 20 minutes. Kozak scored his second goal of the season and second in as many nights, tying the game at 1-1 at 9:03. Stals gave the Checkers a 2-1 lead at 15:27 as he zoomed around the defense and scored by Augusta starting goalie Mike Wall.
Charlotte pumped in two more goals in the final minute of the first. With 52 seconds left, Jake Ortmeyer sprung Jamieson on a breakaway and his shot found the back of the net for a 3-1 Charlotte advantage. Rawlyk gave the Checkers a 4-1 lead scoring with just 17 seconds in the period.
The Checkers increased their lead to 5-1 early in the second period as Stals buried a feed from Ryan Fultz at 3:28. Charlotte got into some penalty trouble midway in the stanza that produced another power-play for Augusta, with Martin Lapointe's shot from the point going in at 9:29. The goal cut Charlotte's lead to 5-2 with no further scoring in the period.
Despite each team getting two power-play chances in the final stanza, the thirds period was scoreless and the Checkers prevailed in the 5-2 final. Charlotte raised its record to 24-20-4 for 52 points, while Augusta fell to 19-24-3 for 41 points.
The Checkers return home Saturday to Charlotte Bobcats Arena to begin a six-game home stand by hosting the Wheeling Nailers at 7:00 p.m. Charlotte is also home Sunday afternoon for a re-match with Augusta at 4:00 p.m.
