Bakersfield Condors News Release

BOISE, Idaho - The Bakersfield Condors and Idaho Steelheads combined for seven power play goals, including Kevin Kotyluk's first goal of the season to bring the Condors within a goal from a three-goal deficit. But five unanswered goals by Idaho would prove too large of a margin in Bakersfield's 5-4 loss in front of 4,637 fans at the Qwest Arena.

Sean Venedam opened a special teams scoring flurry when he buried a deflection from a Kevin Kotyluk shot from the bottom of the circles. Kevin Truelson assisted on the power play goal as the Condors took a 1-0 lead just 6:28 into the game.

The Condors made it 2-0 as Kotyluk sent another shot toward Idaho netminder Steve Silverthorn. Silverthorn made the initial save on the penalty kill, but Mathieu Brunelle camped out at the near post and banged it across the goal line to give Bakersfield a two goal lead.

Idaho answered back with two special teams goals of their own. Jared Bourassa launched a power play wrist shot from the slot past Bakersfield's Ryan Munce to cut the Condors lead to 2-1 with 2:45 left in the first period. The Steelheads tied the game on a shorthanded goal by Dan Hacker, who led a 2-on-1 alongside Matt Reid. Hacker fired a wrist shot from beneath the top of the far circle and past Munce to make it 2-2 heading into the first intermission.

The Steelheads opened the second period with a power play goal when Scott Burt finished the effort by Garett Bembridge by tapping the puck over Munce's right pad 3:05 into the frame. Idaho made it 4-2 on the night's first even strength goal as Matt Reid finished a D'Arcy McConvey breakaway at the 8:27 mark, then took a 5-2 lead on a power play tally by Hacker from Bourassa with 6:20 left in the period.

Following the fifth Idaho goal, Munce was replaced by Marty Magers, who made his ECHL debut and made several fantastic saves in traffic to keep the Condors in striking distance.

On a late second-period 4-on-3 power play, Kevin Truelson lost his balance while winding up a slap shot. Truelson recovered and tapped the puck to Sean Venedam, who boomed a slap shot past Silverthorn to bring the Condors back within two heading into the third period.

With 11:34 left in regulation, Sean Venedam and Kevin Truelson worked passes along the blue line to open up the Steelhead penalty killing unit. Truelson found daylight and threaded a pass to Kevin Kotyluk, who one-timed the puck past Silverthorn to bring the Condors within a goal, cutting the Idaho lead to 5-4.

Magers was pulled in favor of the extra skater with under two minutes remaining, but the Steelheads defense held off the Condors attack to halt the Bakersfield comeback.

Steve Silverthorn earned the victory, stopping 16 of Bakersfield's 20 shots. Ryan Munce was credited with the loss, stopping 16 of 21 shots faces. Marty Magers stopped all 15 Idaho shots he saw in relief work.

Other notes: Eric Neilson was transferred from the 7-Day Injured Reserve to the 30- Day Injured Reserve with a herniated disc. Kevin St. Jacques' seven game point streak was brought to a close in the loss. Dave Bonk did not dress but is expected to suit up tomorrow night. Sean Venedam's two power play goals gave him 14 on the season, one ahead of Idaho's Garett Bembridge for the league lead in that category. The Condors remain tied with the San Diego Gulls for 3rd place in the Pacific Division as the Utah Grizzlies defeated the Gulls 4-3 in regulation.

The Condors complete their series with the Idaho Steelheads tomorrow night, February 11th at 6:10pm Pacific Time. Bakersfield returns home on Wednesday, February 15th against San Diego for Valentine's Day Part II and High School/College ID Night sponsored by WB-12 and the Big 96.5.
