Gladiators fall to Stingrays, 5-3

The South Carolina Stingrays halted the Gladiators franchise best winning streak at nine games in a 5-3 win over Gwinnett on Saturday night at the North Charleston Coliseum. Gwinnett got three assists from Brad Schell but could not overcome three South Carolina power play goals in the loss. The Gladiators took a 1-0 lead on Adam Smyth's 7th goal of the season. Brad Schell knocked down a Stingrays' clearing attempt and rolled the puck along to Brad Fraser who got the puck ahead to a wide open Smyth behind the Stingrays defense inside the South Carolina zone. Smyth walked in unscathed and beat Stingrays' netminder Maxime Daignault with a low snapshot to the stick side for the goal at 12:12 of the first period. South Carolina answered on the power play at the 12:53 mark of the opening period. Evan Schwabe found a loose puck that squirted away from Gladiators netminder Sean Fields to the far post were the South Carolina forward found the puck and tapped it home. Ryan Finnerty and Likit Anderson picked up the assists on the power play goal scored 10 seconds into the man advantage. Trevor Johnson gave the Stingrays a 2-1 lead with South Carolina's second power play goal of the contest with 2:57 left in the first period. Johnson beat Fields with a slapshot from the point off a feed from Ty Morris for the tally. Cail MacLean also picked up a helper on the goal for the Stingrays. South Carolina pushed their lead to two goals with a goal off the stick of Morris 9:50 into the second period. Morris beat Fields as he walked out from behind the Gwinnett net and took his time flipping the puck past the Gwinnett netminder. Finnerty and Nick Harloff picked up the assist on the tally. The Gladiators cut the South Carolina lead to one goal with the first of two 5-on-3 power play goals late in the second period. Jon Awe ripped a slap shot from the blue line on the man advantage with 1:09 remaining in the second period. Schell and Jeff Campbell picked up the helpers on the goal as they moved the puck around on the power play to set up the goal.

Milan Gajic tied the game at three with Gwinnett's second 5-on-3 power play tally with just 22 seconds left in the middle stanza. Gajic was parked along the goal line and took a pass from Schell and looked to slide the puck across the crease to a waiting Adam Smyth but Daignault deflected the pass into his own net for the goal. Campbell picked up his second assist of the game on the tally. Matt Reid scored what proved to be the game winner on the power play 3:42 into the third period ripping a slap shot past Fields for the tally. Marty Clapton and Evan Schawbe picked up the helpers on the goal. South Carolina added an insurance goal at the 3:42 mark of the third period as Trevor Johnson sprung Ried down the left wing to set up the goal. Reid banged his second tally home on the breakaway as he slid past the Gladiators defense for the 5-3 lead. Schawbe also picked up an assist on the tally. Gwinnett scored two goals on the power play while South Carolina capitalized on three man advantage opportunities as Gwinnett falls to 32-10-5 on the season. Sean Fields made 28 saves in the loss for Gwinnett.
