Wheeling Nailers News Release
WHEELING, WV ¬" Alexander Smigelski scored twice to help lead the Wheeling Nailers to a 5-2 victory over the Trenton Devils Thursday night at WesBanco Arena. The win was the 10th for Wheeling, who improve to 10-10 on the season. .
The Devils scored first on a goal by Jeremy Akeson 7:57 into the first period. It wouldn't be until the second that the Nailers would light the lamp for the first time. Ben Street tipped a shot past Devils goaltender Mike Brown to tie the game at one. Wheeling took a 2-1 lead on a Jason Desantis goal at 14:29 of the middle frame. Desantis jumped into the play and picked up the puck in the slot, deked to the backhand and lifted a shot high past Brown. The goal was the first of the season for Desantis.
Late in the second, Alexander Smigelski scored off a rebound shot at the top of the crease to extend the Nailers lead to 3-1. Trenton responded in the third when Andy Thomas fired a high rising shot past Wheeling netminder Patrick Killeen, pulling Trenton within one. Five minutes later, Dany Masse fed a pass across the crease, and it was tipped in by Kris Vernarsky on the shortside to give the Nailers a 4-2 lead.
Smigelski later added an empty net marker to seal the game, as Wheeling picked up the 5-2 victory. The Devils outshot the Nailers 41-35 in the game. Patrick Killeen made 39 saves en route to his 9th win of the season.
