Trenton Devils News Release
Toledo, OH - Matt Lombardi broke a 2-2 tie with 5:30 remaining in the third period to lead the Devils past the Walleye, 4-2, Wednesday night in Toledo. The Walleye answered the first two Devils scores, but goaltender Mike Brown shut down the home team in the third period, finishing with 40 saves in his second win with Trenton. Three Devils, Jeremy Akeson, T.J. Miller and Ryan Ginand, had two-point games.
Going into the game short two players, Dave Leaderer gave the Devils their first lead at 16:01 of the first thanks to a ricochet off a Toledo defenseman. Leaderer's third goal of the season came on a shot from just inside the blueline after Ryan Hayes moved the puck through the neutral zone and found Leaderer in the middle of the ice. Ryan Ginand picked up the secondary assist, his first of two points on the night.
The Walleye's Peter Leblanc tied the score for Toledo 34 seconds into the second period on a carry-over power play. Zack Torquato's centering effort went off a Devil in the crease and directly to an open Leblanc on the weak side. Trenton regained its lead with Ryan Ginand making the score 2-1 with 5:45 remaining in the second period. Tying Jeff Prough for the team lead in goals, Ginand got his sixth tally of the season by redirecting a point shot by T.J. Miller following work along the boards from J.S. Berube.
The Walleye pulled even for a second time when Andy Bohmbach tied the score, 2-2, with less than two minutes remaining in the second period. Trenton killed off Toledo's fifth power play early in the third, and the Devils produced their third go-ahead goal at 14:30 from Lombardi. T.J. Miller notched his second assist of the night by starting the play and getting the puck to Jeremy Akeson at the left-wing half wall, and after a tie-up with a Toledo defenseman, Lombardi pulled the puck away and blasted from the left wing dot, beating goalie Joe Palmer between the legs.
Ahead 3-2, in the final five minutes the Devils killed off another Toledo power play and drew a penalty while Toledo had its goalie on the bench for a sixth attacker. Jeremy Akeson scored on the ensuing man-advantage with an assist to Jeff Prough, as the Devils skated away with their fourth road win of the season, 4-2, in their first meeting with Toledo this season.
Improving to 8-8-0-1, the Devils continue their road trip Thursday night against the Wheeling Nailers at WesBanco Arena with the opening faceoff set for 7:05 p.m.
