Wheeling Nailers News Release
BRAMPTON, ON - The Wheeling Nailers put everything they had out on the ice on Sunday afternoon, playing their third game in three games, and they came away with the reward they were looking for. Cody Wydo and Jarrett Burton helped Wheeling rally from a 2-0 deficit with goals in the third period, and at the 1:28 mark of overtime, Derek Army lifted the Nailers into the win column, with his first goal since returning from the AHL. Franky Palazzese won his second game of the week in goal with 19 saves.
One goal was scored in the first period, and it came from the Beast, who ended Wheeling's two-game run of tallying first. Brampton battled the puck free behind the net, eventually moving it to Reggie Traccitto, who let a shot go from high in the zone. Franky Palazzese made the save, but the rebound popped loose to Angelo Miceli, who slid it back underneath for his seventh goal of the season.
The middle frame followed a similar script, as Brampton added to its lead with a goal at the 9:35 mark. Brandon McNally worked the puck around to Travis Brown, who skated to the top of the left circle, before taking a wrist shot. Joe Zarbo established his positioning in front of the Nailers net, getting a piece of Brown's attempt for the home team's second tally of the day.
The Nailers faced a tough hill to climb in the third period, but they managed to climb it, step-by-step. At the 6:11 mark, Cody Wydo pulled the visitors within one, making a tremendous move in the right circle, before cutting into the slot, and ripping a shot into the left side of the cage. 5:04 later, Wheeling got the equalizer on a power play. Former Beast Mathew Maione led the rush into the offensive zone, setting up Jarrett Burton, who picked the top-right corner with a pinpoint wrist shot from the left circle.
The game stayed tied into overtime, but that session didn't last long, as the comeback win was completed in a matter of 88 seconds. Derek Army led the charge on a 2-on-1 break down the right side of the ice, and opted to keep the puck to himself, snapping a shot into the bottom-left corner of the net for a 3-2 final score in favor of the Nailers.
Franky Palazzese got the win in goal for Wheeling, making 19 saves on 21 shots. Drew Fielding took the shootout loss for Brampton, stopping 29 of the 32 shots he faced.
The Nailers will finish their four-game road trip in Cincinnati on Wednesday at 7:35. Wheeling will then play two home games on Friday and Saturday, both against Reading. The weekend starts with a Flat Screen Friday, presented by The Highlands and Bordas & Bordas, in addition to a Frosty Friday at 7:35. Saturday's game is Pittsburgh Steelers Night, starring Brett Keisel at 8:05.
