Nailers at Beast Game Day Snap Shot

Wheeling Nailers News Release

We'll Take Three Out of Four

The Wheeling Nailers are half way through their four-game road trip, and so far, they have accumulated three out of four possible points, thanks to the split of a two-game set with the Elmira Jackals. Wheeling came out on top 4-1 on Friday night, and looked to be headed that way early on Saturday, as Paul Cianfrini scored his first two goals of the season, before the game was five minutes old. However, the Jackals responded, scoring three straight power plays to jump ahead 3-2. The Nailers also had a strong performance on the man advantage, as Jordan Kwas netted the equalizer that way, forcing overtime in a 3-3 contest. The extra period didn't decide anything, leaving it up to a shootout. Both clubs scored in round two, and Mike Seidel provided the difference maker in the fourth round for Elmira, who won, 4-3. CJ Motte made 35 saves in relief of Alex Vazzano, who gave up two goals on six shots. Casey DeSmith turned away 35 shots during the game, but got saddled with the shootout defeat.

A Toppling by Toledo

The Brampton Beast were off on Saturday night, meaning their last game took place on Friday night, when they visited the Toledo Walleye at Huntington Center. Toledo grabbed control of the contest early, as Evan Rankin and Beau Schmitz scored 2:34 apart to build a 2-0 lead. Rankin and Joel Chouinard added insurance markers in the second period, and those four goals were plenty of support for Jake Paterson, who was perfect with 28 saves, earning the shutout for the Walleye. Jordan Ruby made the start in goal for Brampton, allowing four goals on 21 shots in two periods, before being replaced by Drew Fielding, whose debut with the Beast resulted in an 8-for-8 effort in the third period. Ruby and Fielding are both with their second teams of the year, as Ruby appeared in one game with the Indy Fuel, while Fielding went 5-1-0 in seven games with the Adirondack Thunder.

Our Goals Start All the Way at the Back

For the second night in a row, the Nailers had a goaltender find his way into the point column, as Casey DeSmith registered the second assist on Paul Cianfrini's first goal. DeSmith left the puck behind the net for Mathew Maione, who cruised up the ice, before setting up the one-timer. On Friday night, Franky Palazzese tallied an assist, as he punched a pass up the right side, springing Matt Tabrum on a partial break through neutral ice. Palazzese's helper was his second of the year, as he also had one on November 6th against the Kalamazoo Wings. The last Wheeling netminder to record multiple assists in a single season was Peter Delmas, who racked up three during the 2012-13 campaign. In Saturday's game, DeSmith became the first Nailers goaltender to receive a penalty, when he received a high sticking minor in the middle frame.

Sixty Isn't Usually Enough

Bonus hockey has made its way into the agenda in back-to-back weeks for the Nailers, who suffered a shootout loss on Saturday, just eight days after their first overtime win of the year - a 2-1 victory over the Kalamazoo Wings on January 22nd. Wheeling has played past regulation six times thus far this season, and has a 1-5 record to show for it, despite scoring the tying goal in all six contests. Overtime has been ridiculously common for the Beast as of late, as 12 of their last 30 games were unable to be decided in regulation. Brampton is 5-7 in those 12 tilts, including two straight wins at Reading on January 22nd and 25th. Travis Brown scored the winning goal on the 25th, while the Beast were playing on the man advantage. Wheeling and Brampton have gone to overtime against each other once, with the Beast winning 4-3 on New Year's Eve, thanks to a Brandon Marino breakaway goal, after the Nailers rang a shot off of the post.

It's a Little Colder This Time

Sunday afternoon marks the sixth of nine head-to-head meetings between the Nailers and Beast this season, as well as the second of four battles at Powerade Centre. Wheeling's last trip north of the border came all the way back on October 25th, when it picked up a 4-3 win with goals by Cody Wydo, Clark Seymour, John McCarron, and Derek Army. Road teams have had the upper hand in the brief historical series, as the Nailers are 4-1-0 in Ontario, while Brampton has posted a 2-2-0 record in West Virginia. Jarrett Burton has the lead in the season series with four goals and seven points, followed by Derek Army, who has six points this year and 13 points all-time. This will be the first trip back to Brampton for Mathew Maione, who was acquired by Wheeling from the Beast in early December. The Nailers will travel to their new division rival for two more games in February, before Brampton plays a make-up game at WesBanco Arena on March 8th.
