
Michalek Returns to Mallards After Shining in AHL Debut

MOLINE, Ill. - Goaltender Steve Michalek has been assigned to the Quad City Mallards by the American Hockey League's Iowa Wild and the Mallards have released goaltender David Jacobson, the Mallards announced today.
Michalek, 22, returns to the Mallards after making 32 saves to backstop Iowa to a 5-1 victory over the Charlotte Checkers yesterday in his AHL debut. The rookie netminder was not only named the game's first star but also engaged in the first fight of his career with Charlotte goalie Daniel Altshuller.
Michalek, who was recalled by the Wild January 23, has gone 11-8-1 with a 2.51 goals against average, a .922 save percentage and one shutout in 22 games with the Mallards this season. Michalek was named ECHL Rookie of the Month for October and ECHL Goaltender of the Week for the period ending November 22.
Jacobson, 25, signed with the Mallards Thursday and made his ECHL debut in the Mallards' 6-5 loss to the Kalamazoo Wings Friday night. Jacobson stopped seven of the eight shots he faced after entering that game at the start of third period.
Jacobson joined the Mallards from the Southern Professional Hockey League's Peoria Rivermen for whom he won six straight starts and posted a sterling 1.84 goals against average and .936 save percentage after debuting for the Rivermen on New Year's Day. The rookie, who started the season with the SPHL's Macon Mayhem, has gone 6-4-0 overall in the SPHL with a 2.42 goals against average and a .913 save percentage.
The Mallards return to action on the road this afternoon at 4:15 p.m. against the Toledo Walleye. The Mallards next play at home Wednesday night at 6:35 p.m. against the Rapid City Rush.
