
Nailers open season with win

WHEELING,WV - The Wheeling Nailers, the 'AA' affiliate of the Pittsburgh Penguins and Wilkes-Barre / Scranton Penguins, opened their 2008-2009 season with a win over the defending Kelly Cup champion Cincinnati Cyclones 7-5 in front of over 3500 fans at WesBanco Arena on Friday night.
The Cyclones would strike in the first period on a shorthanded goal by Sean Perkins at 5:04 giving them a 1-0 lead. Wheeling's Nick Johnson would tie the game six minutes later with assists from Jon Grecu and Jordan Morrison. Cincinnati would take a 2-1 lead on their second shorthanded goal of the period at 13:13. Andrew Lord would score the first of two goals at 18:35 evening the game at two. Thomas Beauregaurd would give Cincinnati the lead for the third time in the period at 18:46. The first period would end with the Cyclones leading 3-2.
In the second period the Nailers came alive with three goals in the period taking a 5-4 lead. Goals by Jeremy Scherlinck, Aaron Clarke and Andrew Lord help give the Nailers the lead for the first time in the game.
Rob Sirianni would give the Nailers a two goal lead with his first goal of the season at 7:19. Thomas Beaureguard would not let the Cyclones die as he completed the hat trick at 12:33 to pull the Cyclones within one goal. Jordan Morrison would score an empty net goal at 19:55 to seal the victory for the Nailers.
