Johnstown Chiefs News Release
Trenton, Nj. - Johnstown opened up the 2008-09 campaign with a hard-fought 2-1 win in Trenton against the Devils on Friday night.
The first period was a busy one for starting goalies Jeff Frazee and Ian Keserich as Frazee turned aside 12 Johnstown shots, and Keserich was good for 11 saves for the Chiefs. Neither team was able to cash in, even though Trenton had three power play chances in the first, and Johnstown had one. The best action of the first came via a fight between Alex Penner and Trenton's Thomas Harrison.
Power play opportunities abounded in the second period as well, but this time the Devils ended up finally cashing in to take a 1-0 lead. Chris Poli scored his first of the season when he slid a rebound off of a point shot from Dylan Quaile by Keserich. Jim Henkel picked up the secondary assist on the goal at 15:50. The Chiefs had three man advantages in the second but were unable to convert.
Ryan Garlock took over in the third period and led the Chiefs to the victory with two similar goals. The first came at the 12:06 mark when after Petr Pohl fired a slap shot from the right wing, Ray Macias sent the rebound on net from the left. Frazee made the save on Macias, but Garlock was right on the doorstep to stuff it in for the score.
At 14:39 Johnstown took the lead on the power play when Randy Rowe and Pohl set up Garlock just off the left post again. This time the second-year Chief lifted it a bit slower over the Devils' goalie, but it still found the back of the net. Garlock nearly missed the natural hat trick with Frazee pulled for the extra attacker at the end of the game.
The Chiefs power play ended up 1-for-5 on the night while Ian Keserich made 24 saves in picking up the win.
