Wheeling Nailers News Release

Elmira, NY - The Wheeling Nailers lost the final game of their season-long seven game road-trip in a 4-1 decision at the Elmira Jackals Saturday night.

Wheeling's penalty kill played admirably in keeping the Nailers in the game for much of the night as they held Elmira without a power play goal in their first 7 opportunities. The Jackals finally broke that stretch late in the 3rd period to go 1-for-8 and put the game away 4-1.

Jordan Fox had a fine individual effort in the 2nd period cutting to the slot from the left-wing to fire home his 16th goal of the year. Michael-Lee Teslak made several fine saves particularly through the 1st period and early in the 2nd period but took the losing decision.

Chris Korchinski scored a pair of goals to lead the Jackals attack.

Ryan Schnell dropped the gloves right off the opening face-off with Elmira tough-guy Tim Spencer and the two engaged in a relatively drawn out battle that probably ended about a draw as both players wanted to give their teams the early spark.

Early in the 2nd period the Jackals were outshooting the Nailers 25-10 as they were bolstered by several power play opportunities. But the Wheeling penalty kill was holding strong and Michael-Lee Teslak was making several fine saves to keep the Nailers down only 1-0.

The Nailers would come back with some scoring efforts of their own but were denied by former Nailers and Pittsburgh Penguins goalie Andy Chiodo.

Elmira got on the board midway through the first period when Bear Trapp cut in from the right-wing corner trying to jam it in on Teslak. Korchinski crashed the net and knocked in the rebound.

After Wheeling withstood the Jackals storm and power plays early in the 2nd period it would be a fluky bounce to give them a 2-0 lead. Justin Donati's shot late in the 2nd period from the right-wing wall bounced off an unknowing Nailers defenseman and into the net for his 33rd of the year to give Elmira a 2-0 lead.

Jordan Fox got it back two minutes later to close the gap to 2-1. But 30 seconds after that it was Korchinski reaching out his stick in the slot while he was tied up and somehow deflecting top shelf the centering pass from the right-wing wall by Bear Trapp to put Elmira up 3-1.

The Jackals added a power play goal late in the 3rd period to finally break the stellar Wheeling penalty kill when Chaz Johnson picked up a rebound in the crease off an R.J. Anderson drive.

The Nailers are 27-27-5 and remain in 8th place in the American Conference hanging onto the final playoff spot. Gwinnett and Trenton both won their games as they attempt to catch the Nailers. The 9th place Gladiators won their game Saturday to close the game to one point in the race.

Wheeling finished the year 4-6-0 against the Elmira Jackals. The Nailers have 13 games remaining on the regular season including 9 games at home in their sprint to the finish line in pursuit of a Kelly Cup playoff spot in April.
