Johnstown Chiefs News Release

JOHNSTOWN, Pa. - Six different Johnstown Chiefs scored on Saturday night en route to earning a 6-2 win over the Cincinnati Cyclones. It was Johnstown's first win of the season against Cincinnati at the UPMC Health Plan Ice Rink at the Cambria County War Memorial.

In a very evenly played first period Cincinnati wound up with a 1-0 lead on a last-minute goal by Brett Motherwell. Johnstown out-shot and out-chanced the Cyclones in the opening 20 minutes, but Cincinnati goalie Jeremy Smith was able to turn aside each of Johnstown's 14 shots. With a Cyclones' power play expiring, Motherwell fired off a slap shot from the center point. The shot deflected off of John Murray's catching glove and across the goal line at 19:23.

The Chiefs shook off the bad break at the end of the first and roared to life with three second period goals. Sean Berkstresser extended his point streak to four games by setting up Jordan Morrison's ninth goal of the season at 6:28 to tie the game at one. Connor Shields' 24th goal of the season gave Johnstown the lead at 11:25 of the frame. Fellow rookie Troy Schwab centered the puck and Shields backhanded it over Smith's shoulder. Mark Van Guilder tried to earn the momentum back for the Cyclones with a tying goal at 13:45; scoring on a 2-on-1 with the setup by Jimmy Kilpatrick. Not to be outdone, the Chiefs' Matt Kang re-upped the one-goal lead with his own goal on a 2-on-1. Bryan Marshall and David Schulz assisted to give the Chiefs a 3-2 lead through two.

The third period was all Johnstown as another three-goal outburst gave the Chiefs a comfortable win. Jim McKenzie erased any amount of tension with his 13th goal of the season 1:35 into the final period. Berkstresser posted a helper for his second assist of the evening. The offense slowed down for a stretch as the Chiefs protected the two-goal advantage. On a rush down the right wing, sniper Chanse Fitzpatrick took a crisp pass from Shields and fired home his 24th goal of the season at 11:57. The goal gave Fitzpatrick 48 points for the season and established a new career high. Marshall finished off the scoring with an empty net goal at 18:58 with assists from McKenzie and Schulz to cap off multi-point nights for each of them.

Murray earned his fifth win of the season with a 32-save effort. The Chiefs were 0-for-6 on the power play and 4-for-4 on the penalty kill.

Mark your calendars! The Chiefs return to home ice on Wednesday, March 3 against the Kalamazoo Wings.
