Wheeling Nailers News Release

Nailers fans got their first real look at this year's version of the team in a pre-season game vs. the Johnstown Chiefs at WesBanco Arena. The Chiefs won the game in a shootout 2-1 as the Nailers competed hard with many players trying to battle their way onto the roster.

Sean Collins made his return to the Nailers with several good opportunities. He rang one of the cross-bar in the 3rd period and later just missed tying the game in the 5th round of the shootout.

Rookie Courey Courturier out of Ferris State University scored the lone Nailers goal on the night tying the game at 1-1 early in the 3rd period assisted by felllow rookie out of Seattle in the WHL Chris Cloud and former Gwinnett Gladiator Jordan Fox.

Jordan Alford was solid going the distance for the Nailers making 17 saves on 18 shots. Alford was with the Nailers for a couple months last going 1-2-0 in his 3 games. All of his appearances last season were on the road so the preseason game was his WesBanco Arena debut in a way.

Jordan Parise is expected to be the goalie for the rematch in the Nailers second preseason game on Saturday night at Johnstown.

Ryan Menei scored on the power play for the Johnstown Chiefs at 12:59 in the 1st for a 1-0 advantage and later scored the lone goal of the shootout in the 3rd round.

The Nailers outshot the Chiefs 28-20 on the game including 15-4 in the 3rd period and 2-0 in the overtime session.

The Nailers had some opportunities on the power play but were unable to convert going 0-7 on the night while Johnstown's man advantage went 1-6.

A few scraps developed on the night with Aaron Clarke mixing it up with Johnstown's Tyler Hirsch and landing some solid blows. Thomas Harrison who was known for his fighting prowess with the Trenton Devils showed similar verve for the Nailers in a couple of bouts with Johnstown's Marc Rechlicz.

The Nailers have more players in camp then they are allowed to dress in the game and thus had several scratches on the night including Mitch Ganzak, Andrew Lord, Cliff Loys as well as recent acquisitions from Wilkes-Barre/Scranton T.J. Fox and Ryan Schnell.
