Nailers Defeat Walleye 6-0

Toledo, Ohio- The Wheeling Nailers defeated the Toledo Walleye 6-0 in front of an opening night sell-out crowd of 8,000 at the Huntington Center Saturday Night.

Nailers goaltender Patrick Killeen continued to shine shutting out the Walleye to earn his first victory of the season. With the shutout, Killeen moved his streak to five straight periods without allowing a goal.

The Nailers took an early 1-0 lead on a shorthanded goal by Alexander Smigelski from the top of the face-off circles. Nearing the end of the first period, Mike Gershon found the back of the net for a power play goal after a scramble out in front of Walleye goaltender Jordan Pearce. The Walleye outshot Wheeling 13-10 in the first frame and went 0 for 3 on the power play.

It only took the Nailers a little over half a period to make the score 3-0 on a power play goal by Andrew Orpik. Alexander Smigelski would score his second goal of the game on a deflection in front of Walleye netminder Pearce, making the score 4-0 in favor of the Nailers at the end of two periods of play.

In the third period Andrew Lord would score his first goal of the season to put the Nailers ahead 5-0 halfway through the period. The score would remain the same until 1:05 left when David Marshall would score to put Wheeling up 6-0.

The Nailers penalty kill team would stay perfect on the season shutting down the Walleye for the second straight game. The Nailers are now a perfect 14-14 on the season when down a man.

The Wheeling Nailers will make their Johnstown debut next Saturday night when they host the Trenton Devils at the Cambria County War Memorial at 7:35 PM.
