Victoria Salmon Kings News Release
Boise, ID - In a Saturday night contest, the Victoria Salmon Kings and the Idaho Steelheads met in the finale of a two-game set at Qwest Arena. Victoria's Riley Gill got the start in net while Idaho gave the nod to Tyler Beskorowany.
Victoria scored the lone goal of the first period at the 13:18 mark off the stick of Milan Gajic. The Salmon Kings' forward took a Mike Wilson pass from the corner, and found himself alone in front of the net, where put the puck up and over a sprawling Beskorowany. Victoria skated into the intermission with a 1-0 advantage.
The Salmon Kings took a two goal lead just 26 seconds into the middle frame on the power play. Kiel McLeod released a slap shot from the right point that sailed over the net, and bounced off the glass ending up at the left side of the goal. Gajic would pick up the loose puck and fire it past the right pad of Beskorowany for his second goal of the night. Victoria extended their lead to three at the 10:16 mark when P.J. Atherton took a slap shot from the high slot, beating the Steelheads' netminder through traffic. Derek Couture added a fourth goal for the Salmon Kings at the 11:37 mark. Josh Aspenlind skated down the left wing and left the puck at the top of the face-off circle for a streaking Couture who quickly wired a shot past Beskorowany's glove and into the net. Idaho goaltender Mike Zacharias would come into the game in relief of the Idaho starting netminder following the Salmon Kings' 4-0 marker. Gill turned aside all 19 shots he faced as Victoria took their 4-0 lead into the third period.
Gill continued his stellar play in the third period, stopping all 13 shots put his way to complete the shutout. Salmon Kings 4 Steelheads 0.
Victoria went 1/5 = 20.0% on the power play, while Idaho was 0/7 = 0.0%. The Steelheads outshot the Salmon Kings 39-29.
