Nailers / Cyclones Game Day Snapshot

October 5, 2012 - ECHL (ECHL)
Wheeling Nailers News Release

White Will Be Worn First

This weekend, the Wheeling Nailers will have their newest uniforms on display, when they play their home-and-home series against the Cincinnati Cyclones. After wearing the black style of the current uniform in five games last season, Wheeling will take the ice in their new white uniforms on Friday night at US Bank Arena, and again on Sunday at WesBanco Arena. Oddly enough, these will be the only two times that the Nailers will wear white in October, as they will wear black for their four road games, and blue during their home opening weekend.

Preseason Tradition

2012 marks the third consecutive year that Wheeling and Cincinnati are meeting during the preseason. Much like last year's regular season, home ice dominance has been the story, as the Nailers and Cyclones are both 2-0 in their own back yards. Both of Wheeling's triumphs have been by final scores of 4-1, while Cincinnati's wins have been by final scores of 5-1 and 3-2 (OT). The lone difference this season is that the order of the games is reversed, with the Nailers traveling to Cincinnati first.

2011-12 Season Series

The Nailers and Cyclones met six times during the 2011-12 campaign, with the home team coming out on top in all but one contest. Cincinnati got the upper hand, winning four of the six games, posting a perfect 3-0 mark at US Bank Arena, while taking the only road victory on March 23rd at WesBanco Arena. The Cyclones also earned the lone overtime win (5-4 on January 14th), before the Nailers answered one day later with the lone shootout win of the season series. Wheeling leads the all-time regular season series, 48-42, while Cincinnati has the all-time edge in their arena, 23-22.

Two-Armed Affiliate Attack

The Nailers and Cyclones are two of just five teams in the ECHL that enter the 2012-13 season with two NHL/AHL affiliates (Evansville, Florida, Toledo are the others). Wheeling will be receiving players from the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins and Hamilton Bulldogs, while Cincinnati will be receiving players from the San Antonio Rampage and Milwaukee Admirals. The Nailers received their first set of affiliated players on Thursday, when Stefan Chaput, Olivier Fortier, Ian Schultz, and Joe Stajskel were assigned from Hamilton. Wheeling also received the services of Scott Darling and Zack Torquato. The Cyclones have received Jared Gomes, Andrew Hotham, and David MacDonald from San Antonio thus far.

We'll Only Be Gone For A Week

After Friday's preseason game, the Nailers will have eight days until they will make their next trip to Cincinnati for their regular season opener against the Cyclones. During that time, the Queen City will see its fair share of outdoor sporting events, starting with the Cincinnati Bengals' home game against the Miami Dolphins on Sunday. Then, during the week, Great American Ballpark (located next door to US Bank Arena) will open its doors to the National League Division Series between the Cincinnati Reds and San Francisco Giants. The Reds/Giants series will begin after Wheeling leaves Cincinnati, and will end before the Nailers return to Cincinnati.
